Is there any way to expedite the release of a body from the coroner ?

We are waiting for a post mortem and a death certificate to be released. For various important family and logistical reasons we need to have the funeral very soon.

Is there any way to hurry the process ?

Not in my sad experience but you could try. There should be a family liaison type person in that office - I'd suggest trying to seek them out. Sorry for your loss, and good luck.

Unlikely, however, speak to the Coroner's officer. In my experience usually very reasonable and/or ask your funeral director (if you've got one) to call them.

No. In England funerals don't happen quickly - three weeks after death is usual.

Have spoken to coroner. They just keep saying call again tomorrow. I assume it is out of their hands. I don't know what else to do.

It's very hard. I have had funerals for both my parents in the past two years and the admin was terrible.

How long ago did the person die?
Has a post-mortem taken place and a cause of death been established?

Usually within a week you will have an answer to the above - PM takes place, cause of death established. You can usually get an interim death certificate then if there needs to be an inquest. Final death certificate after inquest. If no inquest you can get death certificate. Body released once cause of death established.

Could you do a service or memorial in the meantime? It can take weeks to be honest even when there are no hold ups, it took a good 3 weeks for my late FIL and that was with a hospital death. With a coroner, I'd expect to add a week to that at least. And that's if they can establish the cause of death - if they need to wait for toxicology reports etc you could add another 6 weeks on to that.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

I'd talk to them and see what they say. Jewish funerals are almost always the day after the death and sometimes even on the same day of the death was in the early hours so there must be a way to do it.
