Build A Bear High Pressure selling to a child

Pretty minor issue, really, compared to some on here. But my DH was with 9 year old DD at Build a Bear the other day and she was paying at the till with her own money. DH overheard the employee trying to sell DD extra things along with the stuffed animal she was getting. Is this legal? Can you complain under the new Consumer protection law? It seems fairly dodgy to us - mind you nothing you wouldn't expect from a place like that really.

What do you mean ? Just the normal "do you want clothes for him " type stuff? What was high pressure?

Someone in a shop trying to sell something? Seeing as your DH was there too (presumably supervising her) I doubt they're breaking the law!

Tbh I would have thought it is exactly what you would expect from there. It is all about the extras.

Good lesson in politely but firmly saying no thank you.

It's standard behaviour in moat shops to offer other items as you pay, same is it is in restaurants to ask if you want extras when you place an order, it's purely sales driven and it isn't intended to target anyone in particular.

I doubt very much Build a Bear were trying to sell additional items because your DD is a child, it's part of their standard script and the same will be said to everyone at every purchase.

I think he was lurking in the b/g and wasn't obviously with her so it was her alone they were selling to. They were trying to get her to spend extra money on accessories, yes. As I said, I realize I'm probably being a bit precious here - but it just seems wrong to try and get a 9 year old to spend more money. I'm fine with people targeting adults like this but a minor?

As I said, I doubt it even really registered with the employee her age, they are told to say these things at every transaction, it's automatic. So yes, I do think you are bring precious, sorry!

I was expecting to read that she has been pushed and bullied into buying 10 different outfits or that you just didn't like the fact the entire place is set up to sell you stuff by focusing it all at children and therefore the pressure actually comes from your own kid!

If the check out girl simply offered a range of accessories to go either bear then your massively overreacting!

the child was presumably not held at gunpoint to buy something. Teach her to buy what she needs or plans to, no more.
