police discussing in depth issues surrounding an alleged offence by a minor

on Saturday a police officer went to my PIL address as they are investigating an alleged offence and need to speak to my DS. They went to this address as it was the one that a company whom the police had to contact had.

Here though is my query - this police officer went and disclosed full details of the alleged offence and why they needed to speak to my DS to my FIL (so no official guardian etc) - my DS is 16 and has SEN; can the police disclose this info to someone who isn't a parent/legal guardian? Or should they have just requested our address/contact details?
