has my employer broken the law regarding my secondment

Nearly 3 years ago I started a year secondment to a different role in the organisation. After the year was up it was properly renewed for a year.

After two years they didn't properly renew it but just told me to carry on.

Then a new secondment was advertised at work and thus secondment is to do half of the work I currently do. My present role has two aspects to it. I prefer that side of it so applied but didn't get it.

I'm now told just to do the other aspect of my role.

but it's in my job description. They've just said they'll change my job description. I feel like they've given my job to someone else.

So you mean on the secondment you have been doing parts A and B of the work and now are being asked only to do one of those parts? I suppose what was the original role before any of the secondments, in your main contract of employment ( as secondments are secondary so in that sense may not count in terms of varying a role). It sounds like your original job description before the secondment was to do parts A and B. Tehre are certainly cases that if you are say a very qualified doctor and they put you on sweeping the corridors that is such a change and waste of your skills it is employer breach of contract. In other cases people are asked over time to do slightly different things and it is not a big enough change to amount to a breach of contract.

You probably need an employment lawyer though to give proper advice.
