from my exP who I work for. He has given me seven days to respond to the letter expiring today. I only received the letter today and have had no chance to reply to it nor to obtain any legal advice over the weekend. What do I do?

If he has chosen not to go through his legal team then he is leaving himself wide open.

You can acknowledge the receipt of the letter via e-mail and state that you received it on the 27/07/2014 after returning from leave. That you will on the 28/07/14 hand the letter to your solicitor and will be instructing them to deal with it appropriately.

I don't understand at all why he has not gone through his legal team. We had a meeting planned to deal with things like that and it was agreed that nothing would happen in between. This is very strange, now that I think about it. I have to say, I fell flat on my face when I saw that letter last night, in the true sense of the word. To the complete shock to the DCs, I fell over the threshold.

May be he has fired his legal team?

Maybe he wants to see you distressed and unnerved. People make mistakes when under pressure so that might be his angle.

You need o remain calm and professional and inform him that you have handed it over to your solicitor and will await further instruction from them. Do not get involved in any discussions at this stage.

Thank you - and yes, of course he wants to see me distressed and unnerved. I will not reply at all until I had advice tomorrow. I also noticed that the email was sent at 17:45 last Monday, so Monday does not count, anyway and the letter was posted on Monday too.

I will still try and reply tomorrow, but not do anything for now. May be things have changed while I was away and the meeting has been cancelled. He is not allowed to contact me directly, only for work matters.
