Bigamy. In 1946. And the court is not for sale on rightmove...

Discovered yesterday the reason my family tree research on a particular individual has been so challenging is because he was a bigamist more interesting than all the farmers I'd found previously

A small article in a newspaper stated he was "charged with bigamously marrying Miss DW" and that he "was at Harwich... committed for trial".

Unfortunately for me the newspaper didn't follow up the outcome, and I was wondering if any of you with legal expertise knew if a record of the trial would still exist, and if so how I could get hold of it?

I had googled Harwich Magistrates Court as a starting point but only discovered that I could currently buy it for half a million...

now for sale on rightmove. Not not for sale on rightmove. Although that would have been more predictable and not really worthy of inclusion in the title...

Try the National Archives website. Searching is free but you have to pay about £3 to view documents.
Try an Advanced search of the catalogue and pick " Crime" from the subject list with your relative's name as the Keyword.

Thanks poshfrock - thats thrown up a couple of leads, one of which I will follow if I ever manage to get to Kew and the other of which I will have to wait til 2046 to find out if it even relates Grin

The nearest functioning mags court to harwich is colchester. You could try ringing their admin team and ask if the records are still retained anywhere. County Hall is another possibility

Thanks trufflehunter - will try that.
