Car accident - other driver left scene without givinge his details

I misjudged the distance outside work and backed into a 4x4 , colliding with his spare wheel. Slight damage to my wheel arch which I won't be claiming for but no visible damage to his. After shouting at me he informed me that he didn't have time to deal with the matter and drove off having only taken my first name. I assume he got my reg number; I certainly took down his.

I phoned my insurer who was lovely and calmed me down and opened a file but I'm now wondering if I should be reporting it to the police? It's my fault but he drove off without giving or taking details and I'm concerned that he could try and accuse me of driving off or something. Or am I just wasting police time? Or was he in the wrong to leave?

I am not in the UK so it might be different but I would ring the local station and log it in their day book for a incident lid number telling them you reported it to you insurance, take pics and leave it with insurance if anything arises. Bettter to have covered yourself by doing what is bright incase the other person tries to contact you

I think that leaving the scene of an accident without leaving your details is an offence.
You've done the right thing OP

Thanks all. I went down to the police station last night and reported it; they were really nice about it and said I'd done the right thing. I doubt anything will come of it but I don't want him accusing me of not stopping.
