Can anyone help me with what to do about this annoying electrician?

We paid an electrician for work to our flat last year and included in that was providing a certificate to sign off the electrics works which we need as we are converting the loft into a second bedroom.

We have paid him for the bulk of the work and only owe him 65 for some smoke alarms.

He told me he would pop around and pass on the certificate and I would pay him the 65. Months passed and I didn't hear from him to arrange it, I sent several messages and emails and he didn't answer his phone.

He then messaged me to say he had posted it however I think this is not true as he would not have sent them and not collected his 65, and they have never turned up.

So now he is ignoring me again. If we try and get a new electrician involved it will be a nightmare as they don't want to be signing off anyone else's work and we have already paid for this once and don't sent to get a load of new costs.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

If he is able to provide a certificate then he is a member of a registered body. Call him again and tell him that you will have to contact them if he doesn't provide the certificate.

You could also threaten to take him to a small claims court to reclaim the funds you have paid as the certificate is necessary to validate the work.

I'd also call some other electricians and ask what they would charge to provide a certificate. It might not be as expensive as you think. For example, we needed someone to check the electrics in a property we bought and it was between £100-£200.

Do you know which registered body he belongs to? I would contact them directly and find out what you can do.

My dh is an electrician and when he completes certificates it is also sent to the NICEIC and they then send confirmation directly to the customer.

I would also contact him and let him know that if it is not resolved in 28 days you will contacting small claims court to start proceedings. Hopefully that will get him moving! We have sadly had to do that with some customers and gets results very quickly without much outlay.

You could also contact another local electrican and find out how much they would charge to come over.

Brilliant thank you. He made a right fuss about doing the certificate he told me that other electricians don't like to sign off other peoples work.

I am not totally convinced he is not a cowboy but I am annoyed as our letting agency recommended him.

It's all the fibbing which annoys me, why just not say he can't do it and he will get someone else in.

Gr.

I've sent him another message now saying we have had nothing though from his registered body either so hopefully that will give him a big nudge.

TippiShagpile · 08/01/2014 12:41

Also, make sure you tell your letting agency about him. They might usually refer lots of work on to him but won't if he's letting people down.

He rang me within thirty seconds. Seems very keen for me not to contact his registered body and he promised to get it sorted.

Cheers all.

Great news! If I were you, I'd probably call him tomorrow again just to remind him Wink and then every day until you have the certificate in your hands.

LittleThorinOakenshield · 08/01/2014 13:59

I'm going to haunt the bastard. Grin

Kahlua4me · 08/01/2014 20:19

I would second pestering him until it is sorted. Haunting him would work!

Dh says you could also go through trading standards for guidance.

Let us know how you get on. Good luck.

LittleThorinOakenshield · 08/01/2014 20:43

Oh that's a great idea I hadn't thought of trading standards.

They helped me once with something and they were excellent, the bloke got stuck right in.

Just to update, I have been chasing this for a year and it's been driving me mad.

One use of the words registered body, and I had it within three days.

Thanks all Thanks

Excellent. Well done you, I am glad you got it sorted.
Sometimes it only takes the right phrase or words to get people moving!
