For a part of my Christmas present my new husband decided that we were to see our first new year as man and wife in style and booked a surprise trip to London with a boat trip on the Thames for New Year's Eve to see the fireworks along with a hotel booking for three nights in London

He booked through a website, (I'm not sure I can put it on here?)

On New Year's Eve we got to the pier in Greenwich in plenty of time, in fact, we were the first ones there lol

The excitement grew as we waited for the boat to arrive, when we saw it sailing down the Thames towards us we all cheered, the the skipper moored the boat then he must have realised he needed to go backwards a bit but i think he was annoyed at himself so he rammed it in reverse and went far too quickly, the deckhand couldn't tie it off in time and lost the rope therefore the boat kept going, hitting a war vessel with a huge thud, we couldn't believe how he reversed so fast but he is now trying to blame it on a broken gear cable, which we know is nonsense as he was driving the boat off ten mins later towards London where we should have been going :(

He cancelled the trip leaving 100 of us stranded in a place not exactly built for New Years celebrations we had all hoped for

Me and DH tried to make the best of it but where we were left wasn't exactly great for nightlife, we ended up in a grotty Mexican restaurant then went to watch the fireworks from a great distance away in the pouring rain stood on a wall so we could see, I was disappointed of course but I felt for DH, he was gutted

The website has offered us the ticket price back but to be honest the trip was all about this and extra costs were incurred, they are saying any further costs have to go through the owner of the boat but our contract was with the site we booked through surely??.....anyone out there that can give us some advice please?

We are so disappointed, surely someone should be held accountable?

I understand why you're so upset but I think this is one of those occasions where you have to take responsibility for your own happiness. Yes, it was disappointing to miss the trip but the fireworks were only 15 mins of a 3 day break. You have to look on the bright side and enjoy what's left. If it really ruined the whole trip then I'm afraid you have only your own attitude to blame for that. I don't expect it was the NYE the boat "driver" was hoping for either!

In your position I would probably make a nuisance of myself with the agent for a while but I'd see it as a game, I wouldn't really expect to get anything out of it. Was your trip covered by travel insurance?
