Hi, its just that I over heard abit of a conversation the other day, someone was saying you have to notify the land registry dept, something to do with title deeds?? We paid off our mortage about three years ago and as far as I know that was that, sure we haven`t done anything else. Does anyone know please?

Depends whether your property is registered or unregistered - you can check whether it is registered by looking on the land registry website.

If it's registered, then the mortgage would also (almost certainly) have been registered, so you should check the title (again via the land registry website) to be sure the mortgage has been deleted and doesn't show upanymore.
If the mortgage does still show, land registry are very helpful and can explain how to get it removed.

If it's unregistered ... No idea sorry! Most places are registered now though.

Don't know anything about this, but, remember my dad saying he had paid his mortgage off but left an outstanding nominal balance so the building society continued to store his deeds. Otherwise he would need to pay to get them transferred and safely stored elsewhere.

Speaking from a Scottish law viewpoint but assume the principles will be the same.
The security needs to be discharged by the lenders - you can do that now, or you can do it when you are selling the property, but it has to be discharged in order for you to sell. Your solicitor could send a discharge to your lenders now to sign and ask them to send the titles to be stored along with the registered discharge - if you want to pay the fee for that to be done now!
