DVLA claiming they didn't SORN and now taking us to court

Hello, Just wondering if somebody could advice on this.
My husband was fined £100 last year for not declaring his bike as SORN.
He payed the fine and sent a SORN last december.
Today we received a letter from the DVLA saying that as of March 2013, the bike was neither insured nor declared as SORN, and therefore they are suing us for a max penalty of £1,000. We called them and they are denying they ever received the SORN, and they refused to give us more information as 'that could be used against them in court'. I am sure I posted the letter as signed for, but I must have thrown the receipt as this is so long ago.
Anybody knows what to do? I am worried because I have heard of many people having the same issues with the DVLA.
TIA

Did you not receive a confirmation letter of the sorn?

This is a common problem with the bloody DVLA. A Google search will tell you as much. Is it the DVLA who are issuing these threatening letters, or a collection agency (such as Collectica)? If it's the latter, try ringing the DVLA, don't mention the fine, and just say you want them to acknowledge through a letter that the bike is now SORN.

The letter is issued by the DVLA, it says we need to attend court in Swansea to answer to the charge. I thought we did receive a confirmation, but I can't find it so I'm not sure. When we called them they refuseD to give any information, even to confirm that we had already paid a fine for forgetting to declare the bike as SORN.

I would get in touch with the CAB.
