My employer is about to start the redundancy process for my team, as he says he needs to lose one member. However, I am four weeks away from maternity leave and at the meeting I raised this and said surely given that I was off for a year, and he was not providing cover, that meant he was saving a wage (I am on statutory) and in the meantime business might increase. If not, then by all means look at redundancy again in say 10 months time. My team is already one down and struggling with work load, so effectively if he did make someone redundant as well as me going on maternity, he's losing two bodies.
His reply was that even though I am away for a year, I would still be entitled to expect to return to my job. Then he added "If it still exists". I take that as him saying he did not expect there to be a role for me. I understand that I have to be included in the redundancy process but feel it's a forgone conclusion that I'm the one he will be selecting since he's already said in front of my team that he does not expect to have a job for me when maternity is up. Anyone else had this situation?
