Prosecution for speeding (gulp) - what happens now?

TheHappyCamper · 29/05/2013 19:52

I have just opened my post and there is a letter saying that I've been caught doing 36mph in a 30 zone right near my house.

I'm not going to contest it, although I am cross (and embarrassedBlush).

I wondered if anyone knows what I should expect when I send the letter back saying it was me?

I really, really don't want to have to go on one of those courses (I'm a teacher, I think I'd die of shame) Blush.

DH thinks that if I don't go on the course, I'll get points instead which will effect my insurance.

This is the first time in 12 years driving that I have done anything remotely naughty Blush - I am the world's most cautious driver normally grrr.

Not sure why you'd die of shame on a course.

Do it and you'll learn, as I did, that the difference between 30 and 36, impacting an adult (never mind a child) is quite literally the difference between life and death.

Wish I'd done the course 20 years ago. I'd have been a much less ignorant self-centred driver and realised why they have speed limits at all.

Was incredibly enlightening.

Really imademarion?

I can think offhand of about 10 reasons why it will be mortifying to go on a course! I was hoping for a little more empathy - I'm having a bad day here!

Actually most of the responses have been very kind and I am feeling a bit better. Thank you.

Perhaps it will be 'enlightening' and I will be a changed driver. Who knows hey?

Needalegaleagle - I'm struggling to believe you I'm afraid. No way would you get done for 52 in a 50.

lougle · 30/05/2013 14:00

AKAK81, why would needalegaleagle lie? Confused

Speed limits are limits, not targets. If she was over, she broke the law. If she was caught, she can be prosecuted. End of story.

nicknamegame · 31/05/2013 14:47

I'm needalegaleagle. Yes, erm...why would I lie ( how odd?!)

I also got done doing 32 in a 30 about 6 years ago. Is that a lie too?

higgle · 31/05/2013 15:51

Speeding points do not have to be declared on Disclosure and Barring Service (previously CRB) check forms. Speeding is not a "reportable offence" Drink driving or dangerous driving would have to be declared, as they are full criminal offences.

lougle · 31/05/2013 15:54

higgle I phoned my council to specifically ask, when I was filling in the form, and they said it must be declared.

TheHappyCamper · 31/05/2013 17:28

Thanks again everyone.

If they offer me the course, I will do it.

I might not like it and it's more money, but hopefully the long-term repercussions will be lower.

I have also cheered up a bit since yesterday, so thanks to everyone who replied Smile

Honestly, the course is not that bad. :)

harryhausen · 31/05/2013 17:33

My mum got caught doing about 35mph in a 30 zone. Out of almost indignation she went on the course. She said it was full of people like her and she had a great time!

seventiesgirl · 04/06/2013 23:46

Lougle I'm pretty sure speeding doesn't count for CRB checks - it's not a criminal conviction, just a regulatory one.

Lambzig · 06/06/2013 11:33

Hi, this happened to me last week too. Am mortified. I am glad that there are courses at different times, as my letter said if i am offered a course i will be informed of the course time and date and I was worried I couldn't attend as I have two small children to look after. I was doing 37 in a 30 limit apparently (so not like me), so perhaps that will still let me go on a course).

So cross with myself and my husband's glee that it wasn't him is excruciating, so my sympathies on that.

TheHappyCamper · 07/06/2013 16:44

Thought I'd update (and commiserations to Lambzig grrr)

I have been offered a course, so I'm going on one about an hour away on a Saturday afternoon

On a slightly different note, my DH has also been caught and 2 work colleagues, all in the same week! I guess the vans are out in force in my area Shock
