Can I get hold of a 999 recording?

Cut a long story short - I called 999 on my husband after yet another incident where I felt terrified. He, of course, considers that I blew everything out of proportion. I called 999 once on the landline, which he grabbed from my hand. Then I called 999 on my mobile.

Turns out the landline number did not disconnect straight away, and the police man mentioned that there was 'the sound of buttons being pressed, and a male and female arguing'.

I would so dearly love to hear that recording. I would like to hear it back to reassure myself that he's out of order, that I'm not going mad. I know they keep recordings in case of court cases, but is there some way I can get hold of my own recording?

Not without a court order. And it would have to be to resolve an issue within proceedings. In other words you couldn't simply apply for the recording in a free standing application.

IvyKaty - you're right, I really don't need to hear a recording to know that do I! A bruise has come up today. Not that big a deal but made me sob, yet again that he doesn't even think he's done anything wrong.

I would try phoning the police and letting them know you wish the recording to be retained, because of ongoing domestic abuse.

They may delete after a period, if not.

You could put in a foi request or ask for a copy of the call as it should have been typed onto the system to generate a call which will tell your what the operator heard when the 999 call was made.

The policeman told me that the system said 'buttons being pressed and a male and female arguing' although he then said 'oo i'm not sure if I'm supposed to have told you that'. So I know that bit already.

TBH as he's now finally moved out I feel so much more relaxed and sure in what I've done, I don't think I need to hear the recording any more. He doesn't think he did anything wrong, I know he did, and I'll never change his mind. I'm going to concentrate my efforts on me and my daughter, instead of trying to make him see what he did.

Why do you need it? To convince him, or to convince yourself? It sounds like you already know the answer - and therefore it doesn't much matter what he thinks.
