maestro card refusing to issue refund for faulty goods bought on ebay through paypal

Very long story as this has been going on for months.The law states that if you buy faulty goods on a credit card the card provider is jointly responsible if the goods are faulty. But my maestro card is refusing to pay. They say there has to be a direct 'buyer to seller' relationship & as I paid through paypal that relationship is broken. But you have to use paypal as a processor if the seller requests it & it was a lot of money. I am out of the dispute period for eBay as I bought last summer. It is an engine worth £1200. They said they can see a payment went to the company but as it was processed through a '3rd party' they are not legally liable. They kept asking me for further information/documents which i provided, followed by a number of excuses which kept on changing. I am now stuck with an engine that doesn't work, a seller that doesn't think its their fault & a credit card bill for something I can't even use. I would appreciate any thought or advice. Thankyou

Yup, Maestro is a debit card, you don't get the same protection as with a credit card.

Was this a private purchase of a used item, or brand new from manufacturer?

I am out of the dispute period for eBay as the mechanic didn't realise at first that the fault was with the engine. We took it to another mechanic who did a more thorough check.

You need to go direct to paypal.

Neither ebay nor your bank can help you.

Crappy I know but you need to be realistic i'm afraid.

Last year I bought goods online and paid with PayPal. It was the suggested payment type on the website, as I normally use a credit card.

The company went into administration, I didn't get my goods, and I've no claim against PayPal as they don't offer the same guarantee as a credit card.

I've lodged a claim against the company as a creditor, but am not holding my breath for any refund.

I'm afraid I got caught like this too, about 10 years ago now but obviously things haven't changed. Apparently some credit cards have even refused claims for Amazon items on the same basis.

The credit card company (in my case Visa) will insist the payment is to Paypal, and that they have no direct relationship with the seller:

You need to take it up with Paypal, and possibly the Financial Ombudsman, but I don't rate your chances - sorry!
