Can a company charge £40 to collect an online order that i'm returning?

Hi,
any advice would be greatly appreciated, so thanks in advance!

i ordered a headboard from www.wedo-headboards.co.uk.
when it arrived, its just not suitable, so i have asked to return it, which they've agreed.
but now they want to charge me £40 to collect it.
the terms on their website say, " in compliance with the European Directive on distance selling, the cost of retrieving the item from you will be deducted from the refund. This amount is £40"
you're not allowed to deliver it yourself.
does this sound reasonable/legal?

thank you everyone!

Hmm...they are within their rights to say that you are responsible for return costs but I have no idea whether they can insist on you using their service for it.
