Just had letter stating I`ve been a victim of identity fraud ? Is this for real or could it be spam ?

I received a letter this morning from Callcredit saying they have received information from 1 of the credit ref agencies in the UK that i have been a victim of identity fraud.
It says there are steps i can take immediately to ensure no further fraudulent activity is carried out in my name.
Then goes on to say
get copies of my credit files from all 3 credit ref agencies
Identify any fraudulent activity not identified by other agencies so we can work together towards resolving these with the relevent lenders.
They have also enclosed a notice of correction for me to send to add to my file !
It all seems very very worrying?
has anyone had similar.
There is a number to call but tbh Im so untrusting these days im afraid to call it incase thats a spam and i get charged 100 quid a minute .

how would they know unless it had been passed to the police?

Callcredit is one of the three main credit reference agencies in the UK, the other two being Equifax and Experian. I would contact them using the details on their website (NOT the details on the letter) to see if this is genuine.

It costs only £2 to get copies from each of the three top credit rating complanies. Can also be done online I think. This is a minimal amount so no big scam there. I would go along with their recommendations ONLY to the point of commonsense. If there is any suggestion of disclosing bank account, financial details or even your email details I would start to smell a rat.

Some of these scams real you in slowly so be wary, but most of them are so blatently scamming its laughable.....sent £50 and we'll forward your 10,000 lottery win you never entered...yeah!

tbh It does sound a bit scammy as they are asking you to 'work with them' sets of multiple alarm bells with me, but having said that there is a lot of identity theft going on so not something you can ignore.

There's so much fraud around lately I'm seriously considering forking out for some kind of identity fraud protection after one of my best friends lost £2,000 and could never get it back. And that's just from someone hacking her phone as she walked passed them in the street!
