Can my adjoining neighbours charge me for work without my consent??!

I have also posted this in Property ...The property adjoining mine is owned by a letting agency. They've been renovating it since before Christmas. I pointed out to them that the downpipe in the middle of our properties has become blocked and is causing moss to grow down the wall.

Next thing, they have a maintenance man up a ladder emptying it out. Fair enough, he's on site.

Today they present me with an invoice for £421 and told me I have to pay half!!

They can't do this, can they??!

we are a pair of semi-detached houses. They own the majority of the building, with the top floor flat being privately owned by someone else. The bill was only split two-ways, not three. The downpipe is slightly over to their side, and it seems from the deeds that they retained the boundry (if I'm interpreting the wording of 1855 correctly) and party wall restrictions apply.

At the very least they should have informed you first and got other quotes. Maybe they are trying it on? Don't pay yet, tell them you don't see why you shoud pay. I would see a solicitor.

I would just write to them and say you do not agree to the payment they have requested as you do not think it is a shared downpipe. See what they say.
