Likely sentence for an admitted criminal offence - warning, upsetting crime

I am a regular who has namechanged for this because it's such an upsetting issue and because it is not yet in the public domain.
Someone I am acquainted with, and with whom I have some voluntary work-related links, has been caught with category 4 indecent images of children on his PC . He has admitted the offence and has been bailed a couple of times. He had, of course, a clean enhanced disclosure CRB record up until now.
It has come as a huge shock to everyone who knows him.
Is he likely to be sent to prison for this offence? Will the fact that he has admitted guilt affect this likelihood?
While I am thankful that none of the children/young people I know have been directly affected by his actions, and I feel very sorry for the impact his crimes will have on his own devastated family, I am hoping that he will get full and appropriate punishment for what he has done and the young lives elsewhere his actions have ruined.
I could do with some advice from anyone who knows whether this sort of first admitted offence will lead to a prison term, I certainly hope so.

I am no expert Totnes. But I knew someone with similar level images. He got 8 months. Every case is different of course.

Totnes I wouldn't hold your breath,mate. The bastard person who sexually abused my child from the age of 5 to 9 got 15 months...just under 4 months for every year he attacked my girl.He actually served 7.5 months....Just under 2 months for every year of the abuse it inflicted.
The sentencing in this country for child sex offences is a joke...we are a laughing stock.

Thank you Cakes, I appreciate your reply. I am so angry with this man and want other people around him to know what he has done. I just want it out in the open and I suppose what is at the root of my worry is that by admitting it he might not receive a custodial sentence. The matter is being correctly handled by the people who need to know, young people being safeguarded etc, but we are all finding the confidentiality required quite stressful to live with. At the same time, his conviction will have devastating consequences for his wife. On both a professional and a personal front. I am trying to keep her feelings in mind and not dwell on what I think of him.

Most likely it will be suspended sentence, sex offenders register, tagged and fined.

Thankyou Totnes,no these threads don't upset me. In fact I welcome them to get child abuse out in the open. My case was in 1995,so time fades the scars,but I still scratch my scars from time to time.

Have recent experience of a voyeurism offence. Dd was on a sleepover, the girls had showered and discovered a mobile in the bathroom filming them!! He pleaded guilty in the end

Similar situation for me, it took me 10 years to go to the police over my uncle, and for 8 years of abuse he got 18months, and served 9. However if it helps, my DH said since I did that, I changed and feel lighter (I really can't explain it), the most important thing for me was him being on the sex offenders register which he is (still as it was around 5 - 6 years ago he got sentenced). I'm so glad I did it, but it is amazing how people still believe he did nothing wrong and I'm apparently a convincing liar (which is why he had to plead guilty )
