police issued harrasment order what does that mean?

neighbour who is well know drunk skaghead and is already on probation came round to my flat last night and banged on my door and threatned me whilst i had three dc under 7 in the flat, police called and they said that they had given him an harrasment order, what does this mean? he has a girlfriend too does that mean she can abuse me if she sees us?

I'm guessing that if he does it again (banging on your door etc) they'll arrest him under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997.

But I'm no legal bod, sorry.

Ok, it is not an order. Only a Court can make an order under the Protection from harassment Act 1997. What they will probably have done is given him a warning to stop harassing you. If they gave it to him, it only applies to him.

if this man and/or his partner have been harassing you eg, shouting abuse in the street, banging on doors and shouting at night, you need to keep a record of what happens. If it alarms or distresses you, phone the police. The police should ahve given you an incident number last night, make sure you keep it so you can quote it back at them if needed.

Yes, indirectly means through a third party eg. sending someone with a message for you. contact doesn't just include face to face, it includes, texts, e-mails, letters and so on.

Be aware that offences under the Protection from Harassment Act relate to a "course of conduct" that means contact on at least two occassion which cause you harassment, alarm or distress. Keep a note of anything he does or says, will help you if you need to make a statement for the police in due course.
