ExP claims to have cancelled DS christening

My despicable ExP claims that he has cancelled DS christening, arranged for this Sunday, 3rd July. He hasn't arranged it or been involved in any way. He's only seen DS once since February, that's how good a father he is! He's known about the christening and I have invited him and also months ago asked him to let me know who on his side of family could be god-parent. He hasn't responded until last night.

Can he legally do this? Do I need his permission to get my son christened? His email said he' cancelled it because churches don't like being sued'. I'm sure it's his usual verbally abusive bullshit, but as ever I want to check where I stand legally before I get back to him.

I would imagine your first step would be to contact the vicar or whoever is doing the service, to see if it actually is cancelled. Until you know that, there isn't much else you can move forward on.

He's just stirring it - ignore him but might be wise to get in touch with vicar & everyone invited to warn them to ignore him if he tries to persuade them it's cancelled.

If he has parental responsibility he has the right to a say in determining your son's religion. However, that doesn't give him the right to behave unreasonably, objecting at the last minute to something he has known about for months. He could try to get a court order to prevent you from having your son christened but I would be very surprised if he succeeded. I think the biggest problem would be if the vicar concerned is unwilling to proceed without your XP's consent. As long as the vicar is happy I would go ahead with the christening.

Not sure whether this is an exercise of parental responsibility that must be done jointly, but I 'spect the vicar won't want to cancel it.

Thanks everyone for your responses. Finally got hold of the vicar on Friday evening and she confirmed that the christening hadn't been cancelled and she hadn't heard from ExP. So, usual load of bullshit from him.

Christening was yesterday and it was truely amazing. Am ever so slightly over-awed because it was such a special day. ExP didn't put in an appearence. Am ignoring all his emails now and will just respond to his solicitor when (more likely IF) that materialises.

I'm so glad it went well. Have been thinking about it over the weekend.
