Can someone help me with pedestrian rights of way on private roads please?

I want to use a road as part of a community treasure hunt type thing I'm organising - so potentially 150+ people might be walking up it. It's clearly marked on Google Maps (although not streetview) - no sign to actually say it's private although I'm assuming it is given that it's a tiny tarmacked track (wide enough for a car, and there are several houses on it) off quite a busy road. The entrance to it seems to have no road sign at all, if that's significant.

Is there a way (short of paying money) to find out a) if it's private and b) if so, do the general public have right of way?

Thanks.

Go to county council's website and look at rights of way?

Check on an OS map to see if it is a 'white road'.

IIRC, the public do not have right of way on a private road because it's maintained by the people who own the road rather then the city council. You could ask for permission. You can ask the council if it is maintained by them or can check with the land registry or on the OS map as Lizcat says.

Thanks all - county website has a register of applications for right of way (and this road doesn't feature on the list) but no obvious way to find out if the road is actually private. Will check OS - and at least I know now if it is private, there's no RoW, so many thanks.

It's white! Ha! Can see nothing on OS to imply private.
