What do I do - I have been the victim of ID fraud?

I have been a victim of ID fraud - my bank account has had a new card and pin ordered and issued on it (which they then used) and I have now had a credit card I have not applied for arrive at my house. The organisations involved are looking into this themselves but what do I do? Is there a particular police department that deals with this? I am really concerned that tens or hundreds of fraudulent cards are being applied for and then being taken en route to my house. Yours hopefully............

I presume the bank notified you, and they have now stopped your accounts/ cards affected? (This should be the first thing to happen)

The bank will probably send you a fraud form to fill out and return in which you have to declare that you didn't give out your PIN etc. Any monies taken should be returned to you within 7-10 days I think?

I had something similar happen 2 years ago, and I was appalled to fnd out that the police are not interested . Since about 2005 the banks themselves have been left to deal with fraud cases, and report them, as necessary to the police (i.e. it's not your responsibility).

In reality the banks sweep a lot of fraud 'under the carpet' because they don't want the true figure to be known - it's rife!

Forgot to say - it's worth registering with CIFAS to protect yourself in the future.

Also just to add, it's worth registering with equifax or experian and checking no other applications have been made as you have received a credit card.
