Who is next of kin when person hasn't been married?

My dad has never been married. He has an on off DP but they haven't lived together for years and I never know if they are actually on or not, he is a private person.

His mum is still alive and I can't remember how it came up but I was saying something to my nan about her being the next of kin and she and my dtep grandad said it would be me as I am the eldest child.

I assumed it would still be his mother, whilst she is still alive but they thought it would have automatically gone to me now. I know when my dad applied for his job he phoned for my postcode as he had to put his next of kin details down, but I'm pretty sure he had to put 2 peoples details down so I assumed my nan was 1 and I was the other.

Not that it matters, but I was curious. I would dread to think that is anything happens, it is me who would get that call. Obviously when my nan isn't around it would be me, I assume.

There is no legal definition of next of kin in this country. Your father can name anyone he wants as his next of kin. They don't have to be related. Being next of kin does not give any legal rights or responsibilities.

In the case of intestacy I believe surviving children take the entire estate regardless of any other surviving relatives.
