Where can I get a copy of a will from? Is there a central office somewhere?

I'm trying to get a copy of a will and apparently there is a central UK office where copies of all wills are stored. I have googled but can't find it Confused.

Does anyone know what department / office I should be looking for? I heard it was based in York but nothing appears on google.

TIA.

Probate office is probably what you're looking for.

There will be a copy at the Probate Registry if the person concerned has died and probate has been granted. If they haven't died or probate has not yet been granted there is no central office you can go to.

Not sure if probate has been granted actually.

It's my dads will, my stepmum hasn't mentioned anything about it and he died 8 months ago. I just wanted to check nothing fishy was going on.

In that case you should ask for a standing search. That means you will automatically be informed if probate is granted within the next 6 months. You will also be informed if probate has been granted in the last 12 months. It costs £5.

Have a look at the intestacy rules here.

If your step mum hasn't applied for probate there might not be a will. On marriage all wills are automatically revoked unless they specifically say they are to survive the marriage.

If you may inherit, you can apply for probate if your step mother won't. It will be a very distressing time for her, so tread sensitively.
