Someone making up car accident claim against me

I have had a letter from my car insurers saying that someone has made a claim that my car was in a collision with them at the beginning of August.

I had no idea what this was about and thought it must be some mistake so I rang the insurers but they gave a date and time and the car details (which are definitely mine) and the name of the road where this allegedly happened. I said I had no idea what this was about and that I had never even heard of that road and I certainly hadnt been in any collision (no one else ever drives my car).

So the insurer said they would go back to them and say I denied any incident. It went quiet for a while then yesterday the insurance rang again and said that this other party were still pursuing the claim for damage and for injury.

I just kept saying I had no idea what it was about as I hadnt been in any accident or collision.

Now I am worried that someone is making things up and I dont know how I can prove they are wrong. I know what I did that day and I know I wasnt in any accidents.

Has anyone else had this happen to them - do people go around making up claims? If it is their word against mine do the insurers just pay up? It just doesnt seem right that this can happen and people can just make things up like this. Should I get a solicitor involved in this as my car insurers dont seem to be bothered that someone is doing this to me. They just say we will have to wait and see what the other people have to say.

Sorry this is a bit of a ramble - thanks for reading this far.

Thanks again everyone. I am going to wait for more info - I appreciate more about cloning now (have read DVLA website etc) but think I probably need just that bit more information about this ridiculous claim before I jump in and contact the police and DVLA. There is still not a lot to go on and a chance it might be some sort of mistake or mix-up I suppose.

The insurers said the other person would have to provide more info as there was no way they could just make a claim with the limited info they have at the moment. So either it will be dropped or I will get more information. It is in the hands of the other party's insurers as well so they will presumably have to respond to these requests or drop the claim.

My children might be remembered at an activity but I dont think I personally would be remembered if you see what I mean. Anyway until I know more I really cant do much - if they say a man was driving for example there is no point me trying to get an alibi for myself!

CCTV is an idea though - I will bear that in mind.

I have recently recieved the same kind of letter mine is of the police though!! I also had a phone call last week saying someone was trying to claim against me? From my insurance ! I assured my insurance it wasn't me as I would have defanatly stopped if I hit anyone! When I got off the phone I checked the date on my work rota and I can prove I was in work that day but can't for the life of me remember if I drove, got the train that day or got my boyfriend to drop me off as he might of had the car (he only occasionally uses the car as its mine and normally he's in work anyway) I really don't know what to do because I don't want to say I defiantly had the car if I never and they have cctv of the car but I also don't want to drop my boyfriend in it? we have both said surly if either of us hit a car we would know about it and we are not people to just drive off we would defanatly stop! We know exactly where this road is and it's not a main road or anything it's a little side street, but apperntly whoever was driving has over taken a car, crashed into them and drove off?!? Would someone really go through all this effort of getting the police involved if it was only a tiny bump? So tiny we havnt even noticed ?!
