Legal advice for a friend who lives in Singapore & wants a divorce from her husband who lives in UK?

They were married 9 years ago and have 3 kids. She works in Singapore with the kids, he's working in UK where the family home and all assets are. He no longer wants to be with her so she's starting divorce proceedings on the basis the relationship has irrevocably broken down.

Does she contact a lawyer in UK or Singapore - where does she stand? It might be that he moves out to Singapore anyway to be near the family but that they then have their own seperate lives.

Thanks in advance

Your friend would be well advised to consult a lawyer with experience of family law in both jurisdictions to check her eligibility to divorce in either and compare the likely outcomes. Everything else being equal it can be less hassle and cheaper divorcing were the bulk of the assets and property are held.

In the UK there is only one ground for divorce - the irretrievable breakdown of marriage by reason of adultery, unreasonable behaviour, separation or in England & Wales only, desertion. The length of separation in E&W is two years with consent or 5 years without and in Scotland it is one year with consent or 2 years without.

Hope that helps.
