Parking bump - no damage, but other guy claims there is!

I had a little parking bump today; (arguing with dh), I made a fairly slow bumper-to-bumper contact with the car behind me. Unfortunately the owner of the car was standing right there!

He had a knackered old car, with a fair number of old scratches on his bumper - clearly nothing to do with me, but he got quite cross and claimed I had caused the damage! DH had a look and told him not to be silly. I apologised for not paying attention but refused to leave my name, but he took my registration number and said we'd be hearing from his insurance company!

Quite honestly, he's trying to pull a fast one. If I had cracked the numberplate or broken a bracket, fair enough, but our (smooth!) bumper is completely undamaged, and could not possibly have caused the scratches.

What could happen now? If he takes it further, what should we do?

Well you should have given your details , you are required to however minor .

you wereth driver of vehcile that caused (alledegly) damage to another vehcile.

If he contacts the insurance company let them sort it out , but I would advise you to contact yours to let them know what has happened and what migth happen.

But you should have given your details and and if possible have taken photos ( camera phone ?) of all damage.

Yes, I thought I probably should have left my details..... I was too cross with dh to think clearly, tbh.

We thought about photos just as he drove away, but I know where he lives so I can pop by tomorrow and see if he's parked there again.

I guess it depends on how vindictive/petty/fraudulent he wants to be. He might just forget about it, or he could become a right pain.

I will send a quick letter to the insurance company and let them know.
