how important are bathrooms in a larger family

We have 3dc and have 1 proper bathroom and a further toilet/whb.

We are going to put on a small extension to give us a bedroom for each dc. Considering putting a shower toom which I think will be a godsend as they get older. Dh thinks its just another crapper to ckean and extra expense to put in.

Anyone any thoughts on this?

I am have 3 ds's and have one main bathroom and a downstairs loo, we are expecting dc4 and will be doing a loft conversion with a shower room. To be honest, even if we weren't having another dc I would be thinking about putting another shower in, as the children are getting older they are spending much longer in the bath-long may it continue, don't want a house full of smelly teens! So my vote is with you!

I suppose an extra shower room would be handy, but not essential in my opinion.

My DD has 5 DC, so 7 of them altogether and they manage fine with 1 bathroom, just have to be very organised

Think 1 would be fine of thats all you had the option of, but think 2 would give you flexibility and a bit more give mornings / evenings.

Also think long term, the house would be easier to sell with a shower room as well as the bathroom.

The other thing that makes me keen for a shower room is our hot water set up. We have solid fuel heating and electric immersion heater for water. The tank isn't huge and so quite easy to run out of water.
If we put in a shower room we would put in an electric shower and although i reckon it would be rubbish pressure at least there would be instant hot water.

I am expecting number 5 and we only have one bathroom with no toilet and a seperate toilet. We manage but I would love a shower room. Much quicker and easier for everyone to get ready in the morning and no queing to share bath water in the evenings.

There are seven of us in my family - two adults, three children, two toddlers.

We have one bathroom, an en suite shower room with toilet and a toilet downstairs. This is perfect for us at the moment. As they get older an extra shower room may be handy but not essential.

In our last house, we had the same as above, but an additional en suite shower/toilet. That was too many for us at the time. The shower hardly got used, and smelled of wee all the time as it was in my sons bedroom.

So, to answer you question, yes, I think an additional shower for you is best, especially if you are doing building works anyway.

If you can afford then yes, I think it would be a good idea.
(But we are a family of three with an en-suite/family bathroom/additional shower room and a cloakroom ), we each tend to use our own bathroom - and I clean them all .

There are six of us and I was so relieved when we did a loft extension and got our own en-suite. We all seemed to need the bathroom at the same time and it caused stress in the mornings. Obviously you can always organise yourselves and make do with one bathroom but I bet it would add value to the house and not be too much trouble, especially if you are doing an extension anyway.

We are building an extension atm and going from 1 family bathroom plus cloakroom to 2 en suites, family bathroom and cloakroom- partly because it fits nicely into our plans but it means there will be no queueing for tge bathroom ( we have 2 dc). I guess it depends on your layout, priorities and needs.

Six of us here, and four toilets, two showers and one bath! Nuts really, especially when you have to clean them. It is a four bedroom house; not too large, not too small - far too many toilets. Arranged over three floors, there is one floor with two toilets. This has always annoyed me. We are getting two bathrooms renovated at the moment so, two toilets out of action. Amazingly, I really miss the spare toilets. My dds are young, and the two year old, in particular, is scared of going to another floor over the toilet. They definitely don't want to wait, so I guess more bathrooms is actually better. I am sure with 4 older dds, I will think this too.

DD1 is now a teenager, and we're finally seeing longer in the shower, won't let anyone brush their teeth while she's in, longer in the bathroom generally. Someone once told me their ideal is one bathroom per child. I laughed at the time, but see the sense now. It only takes a moment to clean another loo, but they're SO handy.
