Do you wear anything that will identify you as Jewish?

Inspired by a thread but not.
I wore my magen david most of my life no problem but since 7/10 I don't. I changed jobs a year ago so I'm visible to the public every day I don't. My dh doesn't think it's safe for me to do so. I reluctantly agree.
My manager and hr know I'm Jewish but no-one else.

My children went to a Jewish school in London but we are not that religious. We celebrate holidays via food but are 2/3 hours away from nearest shul now . We used to attend weekly and children attended classes.
My dd is proudly Jewish and after going to auschwitch even more so. One of her now best friend was white power and had mien kamp. Is now reformed.
Sorry I digressed.
If you are non orthodox do you wear "outward" showings of Judaism?

Yes. But I don't live in the UK right now, I'm in a suburb of Washington DC with a lot of Jews. Sometimes I tuck my necklace into my blouse, if I'll be walking near a protest.

My surname is a giveaway, so anyone who knows me would guess. (Not "Cohen" but something very Ashkenazi) And I have thick dark curly hair. So I get "bageled" as they say here.

I have a Magen David necklace, but I’ve largely avoided wearing it. I’m not actually Jewish in religion, but I have Jewish heritage.

PurpleThistle7 · 14/05/2025 12:29

I am on that post too. Sigh.

And the answer is sadly not since last year when I had a few unpleasant interactions and I just don't have the mental strength to cope with it anymore. I shouldn't have let 'them' stop me but I'm really tired.

I never have done until 7/10, it’s made me not want to hide being Jewish anymore. Saying that whenever I wear my Star of David I’m very conscious of it and who is seeing it. Most of the time I hide it under my clothes. I rarely feel I’m able to wear it proudly.

I’m orthodox, and live in Israel, so not really targeted at me, but I wear a Magen David necklace I bought after 7.10 most days. When DH and I went away, in France I was told by someone on the plane (well meaning) to put my hostage necklace away, and DH wore a cap instead of a kippa, and tucked his tzitzit into his jeans. Think he did the same in the airport on a recent visit to the UK. I travel in a wig as well to blend in more. I don’t know that I’d wear my Magen David out and about in the UK outside of more Jewish areas.

It’s so sad. We never used to do that in the UK.

I'm not Jewish but my Grandad was and my Mum gave me a shema necklace. I wear it every day but I put it under my top at work. I'm sorry for all the abuse you all get. That other thread is absolutely horrible.

MookieCat · 17/05/2025 06:35

I used to wear a Magen David necklace on occasion and more often a life necklace. But not anymore. I almost always hid it though and would have worn it out and about but not if I were seeing friends and certainly never in the workplace.

That other thread was horrible. And for Jewish posters to be told they don't really understand what anti-Semitism is and they are being over sensitive essentially...

A bit late to the thread. I live an hour away from a community, one of 4 Jews in the town (two of whom are the rest of my family, and no.4 is a friend who moved to be near us). I proudly wear my Magen David and love to bang on at work about Judaism. I'm a quieter about Israel.

ErroltheSwampDragon · 22/05/2025 11:49

I started wearing a Magen David necklace after 7th October. It sits quite high so is usually visible. I've had a few compliments on it but nothing negative which makes me feel better as the hate online doesn't seem to translate into my real life. I'm based in London and travel fairly frequently around the city for work.

I always do. Especially now. As they say in ivrit “dafka”!

Sweetdisorder · 03/08/2025 04:44

I wear a Magen David every day, never had any problems. If you want to wear it then you should OP, I think your DH is being a little overcautious.

Davka!

I wear mine openly every day. I am openly Jewish.

Looking back at what I wrote a couple of months ago, I feel differently now. I still wear my magen david, but am careful that it's inside my clothes unless amidst friends. I start to wonder what else I should be doing for our safety. Our mezuzah is inconspicuous, unless anyone knows what to look for...

I'm not so worried for myself, but I don't want my family to attract any attention that will harm my children.

gingergran · 06/08/2025 19:55

How desperately sad is it that we even need to have this discussion.
