I have a hankering for the cookbook of my 60s/70s childhood. But the versions I can find online look too thin. DM's book was a red hardback, about the size of KJV Bible, but fatter. Admittedly, it might have been fatter from use and from all the newspaper recipe clippings tucked into it!

Does anybody have access to older and newer editions of FG, and can compare them?

Hi @Dilbertian. Just checked my mother's copy (which was a wedding present). It's a light blue hardback 1955 edition and apparently is the fifth edition. Do you want any more information about it?

Dilbertian · 26/07/2024 10:00

Do you have a new one to compare it with?

Recipes tend to be laid out differently in older cookbooks, in a way that takes up much less space: a double column of ingredients, with the instructions in one dense paragraph. So I'm concerned that if the newer, slimmer editions have been reformatted in the modern style, recipes will have been left out.

I don't have it unfortunately.

I know what you mean - Ihave three different evelyn rose cookbooks, 2 were my savta's (so prob 40-50 years old) , and they are all also laid out in that double column format.
I am going to her next week, I'll ask her if she has a copy of FG's book.

I suspect it might be this one.

It's not that I want the actual book (I'm sure mum would give me hers if I asked), more that I want the correct recipes.

She has the blue one, and she checked and said it is not two columns per page.

I'm going there late sunday evening so I can check the book on Monday. She has the 7th edition from 1963. She says the 1st edition was 1947. Do you want to let me know what recipes you are looking for and I will look them up in the book.

EllaDisenchanted · 26/07/2024 12:31

I can share pics of the specific recipes as well if they are in there.

mzdemeanour · 26/07/2024 12:48

@Dilbertian is this what you mean by the layout of the recipes?

Yes, that's it exactly.

I'm also going to my mum's next week, so I'll have a browse of her book. Maybe photograph the most stained or marked-up recipes 😁

@Dilbertian if there's any you want that are illegible, let me know and I can try to photograph them for you although won't be until next time I'm at my mother's - unless I can persuade her to give me her copy.

Dilbertian · 29/07/2024 07:47

I'm at mum's. Her FG is even older than I remembered: 6th edition, 1958. Turns out it was a gift from their landlady when Mum was pregnant with dc1 and they moved out of lodgings into their first own home.
