Feeling frightened. Three in court over alleged plot to attack Jewish community

Thinking of the Jewish communities in the North West today. This is absolutely terrifying.

Because this is an active case can we make sure any conversation is around how British Jewish people are unsafe rather than ruminate on the crime and the accused?

It's terrifying. I will never forget Dan Uzan, a guard outside the synagogue in Copenhagen who was murdered in 2015. I've been dreading it happening again ever since.

You should see the amount of guards my children's primary school has. It's obscene.

I have so much family and friends there, it's such an interconnected community. I grew up in Salford, and lived in Prestwich when I got married, and DH's parents and siblings and their families are there. It's so frightening, I just want them all to get out 😞

I was talking to my friend in the UK and she has been discussing Aliyah with her Mum. She said there is an exodus of Jews leaving the UK, since October 7th. I can see it. I have more family members who are making Aliya, one has a family with kids. They would never even have dreamed of the move otherwise.

It's so sad. I have a huge amount of gratitude to the UK, one of my grandmas came as a refuee child after kristallnacht, and we owe the country so much. But I worry about the future, particularly for my old community, which is so visibly religious.

PurpleChrayn · 15/05/2024 12:52

Terrifying.

I'm in Liverpool and spend a lot of time in Manchester, so this would have been a very real threat. Doesn't bear thinking about.

Last night, DH and I finally decided to start our Aliyah application. He's Israeli by birth and upbringing so it will be returning for him! We have a one-year-old and a three-year-old so hopefully the transition won't be too rough for them.

It's all becoming too much, here in the UK. I'm due to graduate with my PhD in July, and am worried that the campus protests will spill over onto the ceremony.

I have dual nationality and moved to the UK from Israel as a child. I no longer feel the UK is my home and don’t see myself here long term but my OH disagrees, he won’t move abroad. Moving to Israel would also be very difficult for our children (13 and 10, with very little Hebrew)… so I feel incredibly stuck. Never thought I’d be in this position but honestly I don’t feel welcome here anymore.

EllaDisenchanted · 22/05/2024 09:58

I am sorry flower, that is so hard :(

MovingBird123 · 22/05/2024 16:52

I think that our supporters are just much quieter, if that gives you any comfort, Flower. I'm not sure if that's enough to cancel out this Pandora's box of hatred, but it does soften the blow. This is why I wear my yellow pin - I'm under no illusion that wearing a pin in the UK is going to miraculously bring home our hostages, but in case someone like you or me see it and know that they aren't alone. Although I'm not brave enough to wear an Israeli flag... Sorry, I started writing this to help you feel a bit more hopeful but instead I only feel how dire the situation is becoming...

FlowerObsessed2108 · 22/05/2024 20:11

Thanks MovingBird, I suspect you’re right. I also wear a yellow ribbon badge and have considered an Israeli flag but yes definitely fearful that it will just attract thugs.
I have had a couple of people see my ribbon badge and thank me. So that’s something. Holding onto whatever good I can!

I wonder if I am the only Jewish Mumsnetter who had a sense of schadenfreude this weekend during the riots in various parts of the UK? I feel sad that Black and other minorities feel frightened to go about their daily business now but perhaps they have a better understanding of what the Jewish community has been going through for years especially more so since 7/10.

79Helene · 05/08/2024 20:10

Not schadenfreude at all but more total fucking despair that a lot of people can't see the double standards in their response and how their political entrenchment precludes them from any kind of sympathy when antisemitic hate is coming from 'their side'.

I've actually seen so-called 'anti racist' MN posters dismissing (or blatantly ignoring) posts making reference to Nazi salutes and swastikas at the pro-Palestine march. We're not allowed to mention it seems, because it's only right wing fascists we're allowed to be scared of and not far left or Islamist extremists and their supporters, who have quite frankly made our lives a fucking misery and left a lot of us feeling very scared.

Towerofsong · 06/08/2024 08:52

I absolutely agree

The riots are awful and disgusting but it's a bit hard seeing all the many, many posts expressing outrage and sympathy for Muslims and other people of colour, when nobody gave a shit how Jews felt for the past 10 months.

Someone even told me it was different because the protests were legal protests and these are riots. This is true, but it is also exactly the point...people were allowed to march every single week in their tens and hundreds of thousands with flags supporting Islamic organisations that want to kill Jews, with impunity.

The racist thugs saw that was acceptable and now think they can get away with it.

blackcherryconserve · 06/08/2024 10:52

I am currently battling on another thread 'Is the current rioting in the UK linked to Gaza ' where one poster in particular is showing her antisemitism and obsession with Israel. I have reported one of her posts from late last night and am waiting to hear back from MNHQ.
The posters name is OhMaria2
Apparently the OP of the thread is also a known agitator.
I am sick and tired of this battle but have to carry on. Never Again is Now.

MovingBird123 · 07/08/2024 16:05

Thank you, I'm glad you were able to verbalise how I've been feeling!

blackcherryconserve · 07/08/2024 17:04

You're welcome! A few of her posts were taken down, thanks to other posters following my example. A small victory for us all!
