It belonged to my great grandmother and has been pasted down through the family

(The soft toy is my daughter's and not as old)

We have the sad/angry version of that octopus, so tomorrow I will photograph it by our menorah 😄 (I'm warm in bed now, and too lazy to schlep downstairs)

PurpleChrayne · 19/10/2023 23:15

Yours is beautiful. So classic.

Is it an octopus. I thought it was an alien with two heads! Looking at it now you could be right. One of my adult sons went to France and got it as a gift for his sister

Yes don't schep, it can wait 😂

Here are our Shabbat candles, with angry octopus! My late FIL's bar mitzvah tefillin box serving as a tzedakah box, since my very charitable DD threw hers into the shul donation bucket 🤣

Also challah and cholent. And "Rachel from Ofakim" cookies!

Mine was left to me by my grandparents. I always wish I’d asked more about the history because I’ve never really seen another one like this. All I know is it was brought to England with my great great grandparents when they fled the pogroms in the late 1800s

octopus 🐙 to cover some kids personal details and so we don’t feel left out 🤣

That is exactly the same octopus and colours as my daughters but the other way around isn't it. She would probably have done the same as your daughter given the opportunity too😂

Oh those photos make me hungry. Have a good Shabbat. I am practicing myself, obviously as you can see by the time.

Yes I have seen that. Oh dear.

However I didn't even realise the thing is an octopus until you said. It looks like the alien from the home film to me. It even changes colour depending on the mood it is in, just like the alien

That is a nice one. Wonder if you can find a Jews antique expert or something to tell you more about it.

What a history it has. It is unimaginable what it has survived. All our families lost so much and so many people 💔

More photos from people please

Maybe we can drop my octopus/alien thing. Sorry if I offended anyone with it. Obviously bad timing with Geta thing too.

I don't know if I'll ever be travelling on Hannuka and need a magnetic travel menorah - or whether we'll just use it instead of my grandfather's hannukiah - but it was so cute I couldn't resist.

(No, never instead of Saba's hannukiah. Perhaps we'll light both this year 😄)

I will show you mine if you show me yours
Trulywonderful · 20/10/2023 20:55

Oh I have seen those before online and was tempted to buy one. Yes they are very cute

Now we look like Jews that are reclaiming the soft octopus toys for are own or something 😂

Else do most Jews have these toys. Is this a Jewish tradition I have never heard about 😂

Yes that is the same one I have seen on Amazon. I like that you can move the candle holders into different positions as well as it being bright colours.

I haven't really got any need for it but maybe I will buy for my adult sons.

It's not mine 😄 I'm repairing it for a friend.

That is very nice of you

Well now I want both a magnetic travel menorah and an octopus. Feel like my home is very incomplete!

cato75 · 21/10/2023 14:18

Can anybody tell me what this beautiful cup is used for and what the wording could be?

I'm not Jewish but my dad's side of the family are. My dad's sister sent this to me as a gift a couple of years ago. I just love it and am interested to know what it would be used for.

I will show you mine if you show me yours
Dilbertian · 21/10/2023 15:32

It's a kiddush cup, used for sweet wine at services such as welcoming the Sabbath onFriday night. The words are part of the blessing thanking God for creating the fruit of the vine, which is recited before tasting the wine.

VerityUnreasonble · 21/10/2023 15:37

@cato75 it's a Kiddush cup, it's used for putting wine (or delicious grape juice) in to say a blessing over before the sabbath meal / festival meal. Gets plenty of use at passover. I'm using the app so I can't zoom into the picture to see the writing but hopefully someone else will be able to tell you what it says.

They often have some of the bracha (blessing) inscribed on them, so it may well be that.

cato75 · 21/10/2023 15:47

Thanks for the responses. It's very special to me. I'd love to find out more about my Jewish side of the family but sadly there is some estrangement. I think this is her way of keeping me included.

Thanks again.

Trulywonderful · 21/10/2023 16:05

That is really a lovely looking kiddush cup

How lovely that you were given it and have something to remind you of your Jewish roots

Hi, I know this is a bit of an older post but I’ve only recently come across this part of mumsnet. I worry I’m asking a silly question here, but what does the octopus signify?

Dilbertian · 24/11/2023 15:23

Antisemitic trope/meme/cartoon. Jews represented as the evil octopus, tentacles reaching everywhere, taking over the world through media/banking/finances.

Not the cute octopus plushy.
