Where do I start with stocks and shares?

Just that really. I don’t know anything about investing in shares. Can anyone point me to a good book or blog to give me some basic info. I’ve been to some financial advisers who just seem to me to want their commission and don’t inspire me with confidence.

Please can anyone offer advice for a newbie.

I use AJ Bell (other platforms are available) and they have a lot of resources for people starting out:

Read 'I will make you rich' by Ramit Sethi. Set up a SIPP and S&S ISA to invest in low cost global index funds monthly. Check them once a decade.

Open a stocks and shares ISA and invest big in the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VUSA) and come back and thank me in 10 years time.

What amount classed as investing "big"?
