Buying an new car in October 2022

I just wanted any input into buying a new car in 2022.

  • is it a smart thing to do now?
  • is it a bad time to take out a loan?
  • is an older car better to get?

Is anyone hoping to buy a new car or in the process of getting one? Are you noticing a change in how dealers negotiate? Are they negotiating?

Nobody can answer those questions based on the info you gave. What’s your financial situation? What car are you thinking of, and why? How much will you need to finance? How are you planning on financing? What savings do you currently have?

i bought a new car recently and there was pretty much zero negotiation on the price as there was such a backlog of orders and they had a waiting list.

Hey @DownAtTheBodyShop thanks for answering to the questions I asked. You was able to answer the questions without me providing all the extra information on what car I want but I am looking for a Ford Puma for anyone interested!

Definitely negotiate then.

I have noticed it has been quite difficult negotiating with dealers these days as I was also previously looking at a Fiat 500C and didn't get anywhere with negotiating there. I was able to negotiate quite a bit with my previous cars but it seems so difficult now!

@DownAtTheBodyShop was you able to negotiate at all with yours? Did you manage to get anything extra thrown in?

If you order a new car now, depending on the make you might get it about the middle of next year.
Because of the delay on new cars, decent second hand ones have been deleting at a premium.

@ErrolTheDragon I have been looking at used cars too to avoid the wait and found a Ford Puma with all the added extras but I still feel like the price is too high. I just want 6-7% off the price!

Can I also just point out, bearing in mind the topic you've posted in, that buying a new car isn't an investment? It loses value the moment you drive it off the forecourt.

amummyy · 22/10/2022 20:41

@BIWI that's true, I'm looking for a long term car that is very practical and will have to invest a lot of money into it
