Was inspired by Aunaturalmamas post on another thread so was wondering if there are other creative ways of investing other than the traditional methods i.e. property, shares that people are exploring.

I've had some success with crypto but ofc it's not for everyone.

Cailleachian · 26/07/2020 23:47

"bitcoin is a speculation in my opinion rather than an investment."

I don't see it as either to be honest. I just see it my savings account.

What I've actually invested in, and would recommend that everyone invests in, is learning how to obtain it, learning how to use it and learning how to properly secure it.

But once you've mastered bitcoin, a wonderful, amazing, fascinating, challenging, exciting world of crypto opens up.

@lockdownlush I am still dabbling too. I am still holding onto M&S at the moment- they went up to £1.16 last week and I nearly sold but then decided to hold on. If they dip to 95p again before the Ocado partnership goes live I will buy more. Nothing else is making much money- my investments are so small I will only make a few £ by buying and selling quickly. I am enjoying it though!

lockdownlush · 21/08/2020 15:11

I've got some some M&S ones to, had a wobble the other day when the redundancies were announced.. holing onto some Eddie Stobart ones to, I'm watching and waiting for their financial to be published. Worth a look..

DuchessMinnie · 21/08/2020 15:37

@lockdownlush funnily enough i bought some Stobart shares this week (no relation to Eddie I think!).

I have loads on my watch list. I sold my Dominos shares though- made 20% which I thought was reasonable.

Pay day next week so will transfer another little sum to play around with, and I also have a free share queued.

Sonmi451 · 02/09/2020 11:38

Can I join in? I'm dabbling too, just tiny amounts. Don't want to risk too much when I'm still getting used to how the platform works.

I made about 45p on some Barclays shares this week Grin

DuchessMinnie · 03/09/2020 08:10

@Sonmi451 welcome! I am also making small proceeds- £1.29 this week on Superdry. Let's not spend all our profit at once eh Smile

Still holding onto M&S- I am in profit but not much, hoping they will do well this month. Also I thought BT was worth a try so have bought 50 shares there.

Sonmi451 · 04/09/2020 19:39

@DuchessMinnie Thank you! I've got a few Virgin Galactic shares, but they're not looking too clever!

stevalnamechanger · 04/10/2020 22:41

@CherryPieSky

I use the trading 212 app. Started with smaller amounts to see how I did and then got a little braver. The key for me is choosing the 'safer' companies although of course this isn't foolproof. I then read up on them and I read through investment projections for each company - which is as dull as it sounds

I'm invested with just 4 companies right now. 33k in one, 60k in another, 22k in the third and then 6K in my last one - which is my wildcard! And yep I've gone over my 100k but couldn't resist after a big drop today

I know what the usual price is for these companies shares - although I'm aware that past performance isn't necessarily an indicator of future performance. All my companies are massive names btw - nothing weird.

I'll use M & S as my example. I know what they usually trade at so when they drop below it, I shove in some money. So I did this the other week when they dropped to 89p. I then waited and watched. I'd already decided I wanted to make £500. So when it hit that, I sold. I was lucky that day - took about 6 hours to come up. Invested back when they dropped again but this time I got locked in for a week before I sold.

And so on and so forth. I hop in and out and I don't hold on for the £££ - my best so far was 7k in one go but I was locked in for nearly 3 weeks there!

Drop me a PM if you went and I'll let you know the companies I'm invested in. I boringly choose the same ones but I'm not sure how wise it is for me to divulge them all here 😀

Do share! Would be interested to know your picks

If anyone is thinking of opening a free-trade account and wants a free share you can use my referral link and we both get a free share

Alexalee · 05/10/2020 15:36

freetrade.io/freeshare?code=ZOB5RV2P7H&sender=zrSR8UAp

There are even 10 apple shares to win

MiddlesexGirl · 19/01/2021 23:35

A pp said they used both Freetrade and Trading 212 apps. Why would you bother with two platforms?

grumpypug · 20/01/2021 09:42

I use both platforms. I use 212 for short term trades and I've only invested a tiny amount since about September time (£250). I'm up over £100 and use it as a bit of fun. I'm about to open an ISA through them I think, just doing a little bit more research first.

I use my free trade app for longer term saving and will cash it out before it reaches the CGT threshold, again saving relatively small amounts. I have something specific in mind I'm saving for so using my Freetrade app as a saving account with better interest than the banks. Obviously I won't benefit from the longer term compound interest but better than the minimal interest banks are giving.

If anyone is thinking of opening an account, here is my referral link for Trading 212. We would both get a free share when you make your first deposit. I'm really impressed with the ease of using both the apps.

Do you want to get a free stock share worth up to ‎£ 100?

Create a Trading 212 Invest account using this link www.trading212.com/invite/GbosKslz and we both get a free share!

@Cailleachian do you have any resources you recommend for learning about bitcoin and other crypto?

YogaLite · 27/01/2021 18:25

@CherryPieSky, if you are still around, could you inspire me too on your selection and investment ideas...

Just seen this.

There is a good getting started guide on the Bitcoin Foundation website. bitcoin.org/en/getting-started

Anything by Andreas Antonopoulis on youtube, (his books are also excellent)

I love bankless (newsletter.banklesshq.com/) but it can get quite technical.-

tentative3 · 29/01/2021 15:25

Great, thanks for those links, I'll have a look.
