The shares I hold I have done so for years. But I wonder do other people buy and sell. Is this a better way to make your money work for you? Has anyone made a decent amount doing this? Would you share your success?

I can't say i buy and sell shares myself, i like to invest in a portfolio of several different funds. It's always such a nerve racking choice to pick shares and then there's the cost.

Try an investment club

Yes - there are various share dealing sites e.g. Hargreaves and Landsdowne, Halifax have one, think the Share centre is another. Some sites let you do "virtual portfolio" which you could use as practice first before investing.

I have definitely made more than having the same money in a bank but not as much as I could have as have had shares that I have cashed in at a loss. For tips for shares to buy Tips ar look at investing sites, Investors Chronicle, Interactive Investor, Daily Telegraph Questor and Blomberg. If you are doing short-term trades use a stop loss to protect yourself from big losses. Look for companies with growth potential as well as paying a dividend. Other idea would be to invest regularly into a fund.
