Anybody bought gold as an investment?

I'm thinking about buying some gold as an investment. I think I'd rather have my money in something else but paper/banks.

Has anybody done this? Care to share your experience?

Yes as part of a portfolio though, via an ETF. Just buying on its own is a risk level 11 out of 10 IMHO. You must be prepared to see values fall. I would be considering your capacity for loss if I were advising you.

Thank you for replying.
What I had in mind is more Bullion Vault type of purchase. I am not necessarily interested in gaining a quick high profit. I am thinking this to be a long time investment for my DD.

Hmm not so sure. I think unless you can make a sizeable purchase that transaction costs, storage and insurance would make it unlikely to be viable. TBH I'm doing the mumsnet guess on that though so actually not a reliable answer. Points to consider though.

Food for thought, thank you!

I would not use bullion vaults or "paper" gold. Gold market is quite frothy right now but fundamentals sound - eg check out (analyse yourself) physical deposits vs. Sold quantities, mining costs and the very eyebrow-raising current situation between the us federal reserve and the bundesbank.

As for storage - bury it in your garden.

Wooow, that's a can of worms there! Obviously had no idea, thanks dolomites, fascinating!

Gold is one of the great investment that we can take. The gold jewelries I bought several years ago have higher value now compared to the time when I first bought it. I can say that gold is something worth investing for.

I almost bought some last year (as a hedge against inflation) but changed my mind because I thought that the price would drop. Which it did.

I'm with Dolomites Donkey though - if you're going to buy it, you want the metal where you can see it!

BTW, DO NOT buy 'gold jewelries' (see above) for an investment! Reputable bullion only.
