Secondary Unexplained Infertility and Recurrent Miscarriages

Myself and my husband have been TTC baby #2 since June 2024. We had a MMC in April 2025 but haven’t conceived since then. Our consultant has diagnosed us with secondary unexplained infertility (which I prefer to call unexplored infertility) and recurrent miscarriages.

Bit of a back story, we started TTC baby #1 in November 2019, our son was born August 2022 after two MMC’s. Not long before conceiving our son, I was diagnosed with Factor V Leiden and took aspirin and blood thinning injections (Dalteparin) throughout my pregnancy. There wasn’t a plan in place with my last pregnancy and I didn’t get the Dalteparin until, I believe, too late. However, my consultant has said she doesn’t think this would have been the cause of the miscarriage and testing on the POC didn’t give any answers.

I had an AMH test last year which was 6.5 (so on the lower side).
Other blood tests I’ve had that were normal; Progesterone (26 pmol/L (low) the first time, 33.6 pmol/L (‘satisfactory’) the second), Oestrogen, FSH, LH, HBA1C, FBC, TSH, LFT, U&E, VITD, Folate, B12, Ferritin, Albumin, Phosphate, Calcium, Lupus, APS.
Scans: HSG (all clear) and currently waiting on a 3D ultrasound.
DH has had 3 semen analysis’ - He has low ‘normal forms’, but as the amount of sperm is high I’ve been told this will counterbalance it.

Our consultant said that our only option is IVF but I don’t really want to go down that route, 1. Due to cost and 2. We don’t know the cause for the infertility or miscarriages. This is when I asked for an ultrasound - She told me I was “clutching at straws” but I told her the only thing I’ve got left to do is clutch at straws, and she agreed to request it.

I feel like I’ve asked for everything I can think of. I’m just wondering if anyone has any other suggestions? I know there’s DNA Fragmentation tests, and NK Cell testing, but we’d have to pay private for these and they’re quite pricy!

Also, If anyone has any miracle cures/things we could try, I’d love to hear them!

I’ve tried acupuncture and agnus castus, both didn’t seem to help. Myself and DH take Proceive, and I also take extra VitD, Iron and Folate.

Hi, sorry you’re having a frustrating time with the testing. What protocol did you have with your successful pregnancy? Just the blood thinners
and aspirin?

I’ve had recurrent miscarriage and just had my first successful pregnancy this summer via IVF with genetic testing. After my 3rd MC I got my NK cells tested via NHS and they were high. I started an intense medical protocol and got pregnant twice more but both were MC. Then I started IVF while also following my NK cells medical protocol and it worked. First transfer failed but second time I also added in blood thinners and it worked. Baby girl arrived in July.

Re your options. Sounds like your consultant wasn’t very helpful. How old are you? Could you try a few medicated cycles / ovulation induction before going to IVF ? You could try and get referred to Epsom Hospital to have your NK cells tested via NHS (I don’t think it matters where you actually live) because they do the testing on the NHS. I truly get the reluctance to pursue IVF but it’s the best thing I did and I wish I’d started earlier. I do agree that finding a cause if possible is the best approach, but IVF is not as scary and daunting as it seems IMO. X

@Hopeandfaith1990Hi, thanks for replying! Yeah, with my son I took aspirin from just after ovulation and then once I got a positive test I was prescribed blood thinners.

I’ve heard about NK Cells but my NHS trust don’t do the test unfortunately. I mentioned it to my consultant as I know there’s a consultant that does the test at Epsom but she basically just said good luck and that it’s expensive 🙃

I’m 33, 34 in December. As I’ve not had a diagnosis of anything I’m not sure if my consultant would let me have a medicated cycle, as what would they be medicating? I feel like I have an ovulation issue but no one will listen to me. My cycles are not regular (between 24-36 days long) and I have barely any CM. But as my bloods are “satisfactory” they’re not bothered. I also feel I could have silent endometriosis as I have some of the symptoms and my mum has endometriosis but, again, no one will listen.

I’m considering IVF more and more but I just don’t know how we’ll afford it, especially if we need more than one round x
