Is IVF worth trying at 40 with low AMH?

I am 40 with a AMH of 3.38…IVF worth bothering with? Would only be prepared to have one cycle.

I don’t think that AMH is that low, I know of people that still got a fair few eggs from IVF with numbers lower than that. You may also want to look into create fertility as they do other options for low AMH such as natural IVF.

It's not unreasonable to try IVF but it's unreasonable to only prepare for one cycle, I am sorry to say. On average, esp at this age, it takes at least 3 cycles. Of course, there are exceptions. But that's what we were told and that was true for us. Ask your IVF consultant about the odds to make an informed decision and to avoid the heartache.

If you and your partner, if applicable, are open to donor eggs it's an option to potentially maximise chances for the one cycle. That said, your age and AMH aren't unusual for IVF so it absolutely could be successful. It's so difficult as there are no guarantees, some do one cycle and take a baby or multiple babies home from it and others need multiple cycles and for some it never works. The first cycle is often a trial run to see how the body responds to medication but I completely understand financial, physical or emotional limitations around multiple cycles. If it's a cost thing I can recommend Thérapie Fertility in Dublin for a cheaper IVF (and transfers) than what I've seen in the UK.
If you go ahead with your own eggs and one cycle then do look into clinics with a good track record of lower AMH. If you have any concerns or questions around the actual process ask away. 😀

im not open to donor eggs

There's a great clinic in London called Avenues - i'm doing IVF with them at 40 and they are really good at adapting to your circumstances, everything's tailored and adapted. We're in our first cycle and we got 13 eggs, which made it to 7 blastocysts (5 day embryos) and we got them PGT-A tested and 2 of them were chromosome normal so we've got 2 goes at transfer.

I was successful at 41 but it took 3 complete cycles to get there (2 were cancelled after stims).
When I had my first appointment at the clinic I said I was prepared for 1, maximum 2 cycles but life happened and I kept going.. I was lucky my insurance covered a big part of the costs.
I was told not to judge everything by the first round. The first cycle often gives doctors valuable information about how your body responds, which can help them make adjustments and potentially improve the next attempt.

I agree with the previous posters, but I would also consider whether there are any additional procedures or strategies that could potentially improve your chances of success.
Definitely read the book It Starts with the Egg, and have a look at the webinars on MyIVFAnswers and FertilityIQ, where top fertility experts share their recommendations and insights. On FertilityIQ, they even discuss how to choose a specific doctor within a clinic, rather than simply choosing the clinic itself.
If possible, I’d also look for a clinic or doctor with experience treating cases similar to yours. At the very least, consider getting a second opinion from a specialist with that experience. They may be able to suggest additional options that your current clinic hasn’t considered.Good luck!

I had 2 healthy children through Ivf with low Amh - one at age 38 ( 2nd attempt) my second baby at age 42 ( 3rd attempt). Total ivf cycles 8
i never had any embryo reach blastocyte so nothing to freeze. I had 2 more attempts after my second child- to freeze all - i had zero ..
now i started fresh to transfer any embryo of any quality. From my experiemce lab comments on wuality mean nothing. My first child was day2 transfer of a poor quality embryo which i was recommended to discard and try again but my gut feeling was to transfer and it worked. This process is a complete gamble and the reality is, the more you try maybe the higher your chance - but still is no guarantee of success xxx goodluck
