Brown Spotting

Only 5 weeks but have had some brown spotting on tissue today. Is this normal at this stage?
it’s taken 7 years to have a positive so I’m now so worried!

hi I had this the night before I found out so just over 4 weeks. It was in pants - enough for one of those thin panytliner things, not a full pad.

also at around 11 weeks
the second was more with red blood + clot so got it checked out and was a haematoma.

Never got the early one checked due to how early it was so dunno if it was the haematoma or just random stuff xx

@Renisenb thank you for responding. Did everything turn out ok for you? I’m on blood thinners so don’t know if that makes it worse Xx

I think brown spotting is quite normal and it shows that it’s old blood. I had quite heavy red bleeding at 6 weeks and got it checked out and luckily turned out okay and was told it’s a fairly common early pregnancy symptom that probably doesn’t get spoken about enough

that being said if it gets worse and you have pains or anything it’s always worth getting checked outa and better to be safe than sorry.

all the best x

@SprinklesOfHope thanks so much. That’s really reassuring. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼

I have been back and forth to the toilet since to check and it seems to be subsiding and not worsening so hopefully that’s a good sign. Thanks again xx

Hiya I’m now 21 weeks and so far so good.

The longer second episode was intermittent over 2 days. I had my scheduled 12-week scan 8 days later and the haematoma had significantly shrunk by then.
probably at around 15 weeks I had a tiny clot come out, assuming from the haematoma, but didn’t see a doctor.
Baby looked healthy a week ago at my next scan xx

Definitely the fact it’s getting better not worse must be good xx

Haematomas are very common in ivf pregnancies and a lot of woman who do ivf also have spotting, it can just be from all the medications, progesterone and irritation also sexual intercourse can cause spotting.. also sometimes old blood comes away after egg retrieval or from the ovary but just takes its time to come away and exit, also sometimes implantation bleeding doesnt come away straight away and removes as the uterus stretches. There are so many reasons for spotting during early pregnancy thats its really hard to pin point . If the spotting has slowed down and not getting heavier then try not to worry. Do you have a viability scan coming up?

Med9 · 20/03/2026 08:58

@Miraclemuma03 thank you for the reassurance. I do still have it this morning and if I were to compare, I’d say it’s maybe slightly more than yesterday. Although nothing substantial and still light brown.
My scan isn’t until 7th April so quite a long wait yet, annoyingly x

@Med9 I had brown spotting until after my 12 week scan in my successful IVF pregnancy. I won't lie, for the whole time I was pregnant I felt anxious about going to the toilet.

I also had spotting for nearly 13 weeks after my planned c section. I had a scan at 12 weeks post partum and they were pretty uninterested. I suspect I had a haematoma and no one had noticed or told me.

Wishing you all the best 💐

Med9 · 20/03/2026 20:41

Thanks @CurbsideProphet that’s reassuring. I think I’ll be anxious throughout regardless because of how long it’s taken to get here.

I’m glad things turned out well for you. Shame they were disinterested in finding the cause though xx

Its really hard to know what way things could be going without that initial scan. The spotting could be normal or could be signs things arnt going right but for right now id say rest while you can, limit heaving lifting and loads of bending. If the spotting is barely there then id say it could be nothing to worry about. I have spotted and bled my way through majority of my successful pregnancies. Usually starts around 5 to 6 weeks, most of the time its from a haematoma, there's nothing that can be done about it , you just have to wait for it to reabsorbe. Other times there Is no explanation for the bleeding what so ever.

Miraclemuma03 · 21/03/2026 08:37

Also I should add that pregnancy discharge is thicker and there is a lot and can come out tanned or darker coloured that looks like brown spotting but actually isnt.. maybe google it of you can stomach that sort of thing. There is a chart somewhere online with the colours of pregnancy discharge lol. Google has everything.

@Miraclemuma03 thanks so much for sharing your experiences. Sadly since I posted, I’ve had red blood. Didn’t last now and it’s now reverted back to very light brown and barely anything so I’m still hopeful but obviously anxious. I contacted on call doctor this morning and the lovey nurse called back and I’ve just had bloods taken for Hcg levels. Trying to remain optimistic x

The first trimester is such a hard part of pregnancy. Im sorry your going through this and I really hope you have a good outcome.

PlanBFertility26 · 21/03/2026 16:43

@Med9 sending hugs. I hope everything turns out ok x

Med9 · 21/03/2026 19:41

Thanks both. It’s very little and brown now so hoping that’s a good sign? Have more bloods Monday so at least I’ll know a little more when those results come back x

Update in case anyone finds this thread in future. So far so good. Hcg 19500 from blood taken Friday. Blood loss was hematoma which is not harming the baby. Fetal pole and both sacks seen on scan today at 5w5d. 🤞🏼
