Day 3 transfer

What are your thoughts / experiences of a day 3 embryo transfer ? Reason for asking is only 1 embryo.

Iv had 2 day 3 fresh embryo transfers and both have been successful, one now is 11 and the other is 4. Though my clinic no longer does day 3 transfers, the believe day 5 have more success but I have had success with a day 3 embryo so hope that gives you some hope.

I’ve had two day 3s and two day 5s. The day 3s were because I only had one each time. The last transfer I also only had one, but asked to let it develop till day 5. My reasons for this were very specific to my previous results—many perfect looking day threes that arrested before blast, too many really to just be normal statistically. So I wanted the information about whether the change in protocol affected the result (it did) so it was the right choice for me.

Ive heard varying things such as “the best place for the embryo is inside the body” but when I push the embryologists to explain this scientifically, or with statistics/studies, the answer isn’t convincing. It’s more about “any transfer is better than no transfer”.

I think that if the embryo is of good genetic makeup, it will do well in development. I’m not sure it increases or decreases its chance to put it back earlier, but I absolutely understand wanting it put back at day 3 to mitigate the risk of no transfer at all.

best of luck whatever you decide. If you’re really unsure sometimes it’s just best to take the embryologists advice.

Thank you so appreciate you taking the time to reply to my post. My previous two failed rounds I’ve collected more eggs and we waited until day 5 so this is the first time I’ve been given the option of a day 3 transfer. Statics are so unclear so it’s excellent to get peoples real life experiences thank you xx

I just had a failed day three transfer - for the reason of only having one embryo. They didn't offer day five as an option until I was gowned up and about to be marched into the theatre. Hope the day three transfer goes better for you xxx

I had a 3dt thar resulted in a positive pregnancy. They collected 5 eggs and by day 3 there were only 2 embryos left and one was clearly doing better than the other so they did the transfer on day 3. The other embryo didn’t make it to day 5 so we only had one successful embryo from the process but it turned out it was all we needed. Fingers crossed for you

The only transfers that worked for me were 2 fresh day 3 transfers, oldest is 3.5 years old and youngest is 7 months old.

From first round the day 5 blastocysts ended in a MMC and a failed transfers. They were both A grades. From second round the 2 blastocysts are still on the freezer but not very good quality.

I still remember the conversation I had with the embryologist on the morning of the day 3 transfer when she said that they recommend a day 5 blastocyst transfer. I said that day 5 transfers haven’t worked for me and I have nothing to lose now so I wanna go for it today + as a previous poster said I believe en embryo is better inside than outside so here we are with me currently feeding the 7 month old at 2.30am.

Also the current 2 blastocysts in the freezer were “very good quality” on day 3 per the embryologist but on day 5 they were grade bb and bc. The other 3 I had on day 3 she said were “good quality” but on day 5 they “weren’t suitable for pregnancy” as per the embryologist so they were discarded.

All the best of luck @Stilltrying101

@Stilltrying101 how many days post transfer are you now?

Stilltrying101 · 27/11/2025 12:50

@K2012 I am 10dpt - I am resisting the urge to test now as the clinic have booked me in for a blood test on the 1st December - so I’m going to wait for that . I had cramps 2 days ago which is about the time my period would be due and a couple of bits of spotting. Keeping everything crossed but not too hopeful xxxx

How did you get on?

Stilltrying101 · 02/12/2025 08:23

Well I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you x

Stilltrying101 · 02/12/2025 17:54

Thank you so much. I got the results this afternoon and it’s negative 😢. We purchased two rounds so I think we will do another round of IVF in Feb. It is just so very Brutal - feeling pretty hopeless at the moment but trying to look forward xxx

Aw no. I can only imagine how disappointing this is. It’s such a brutal process. It’s the lack of control that affected me the most. It’s hard but you’re right to just keeping moving forward. Easier said than done though I bet xxx
