Egg retrieval- only 4 eggs.

We had our egg retrieval today and we only got 4 eggs. I know it’s better than 0 but I can’t help feeling deflated and like it’s all over. We find out tomorrow whether we have any fertilised but I’m not holding out much hope at the moment. Not really sure what I’m asking - just needed to share.

Sympathy. I got 8 the first round; the second round I was told it all looked much better, sure to be more ... and I got 3. But all 3 got to day 5 and I'm 7 weeks. All you need is one good one. It is not all over.

(I've been told that, even on stims, some people's bodies naturally tend to produce fewer, good eggs and others tend to produce more, lower quality - sometimes, if you don't get many eggs, it seems to be because that's what your body does; it prioritises the stronger ones.)

Hi OP. On my first cycle, I got 5 eggs and 1 made it to day 6 poor quality blast which did not implant. For second cycle, I got 4 eggs. I was weeping after the doctor told me because I thought it was all over at that point. However out of those 4, 1 made it to a day 5 good quality blast and I’m currently 30 weeks pregnant with that. There is hope. Best of luck.

Just a thought but this could be a very good thing. One difficult choice you can end up with commonly in IVF is what to do with left over embryos. Maybe you have got just the right amount. Let us know how it goes today.

My first round 1 got 4 eggs - 2 mature and both made it to day 5. They resulted in a BFN and a chemical.

My second cycle we changed protocol completely and I got 6 eggs, all mature. All made it to day 5 but only 3 suitable to freeze. fast forward a few years, and I have a healthy toddler, a baby and 1 embryo still frozen.

Quality over quantity. Small numbers can work out ok x

I totally understand how you’re feeling — 5 eggs are collected today, and I’ve been feeling a bit deflated too. How did your fertilisation results turn out? Hoping you got some good news!

Thanks everyone! We actually had 3 fertilise so not feeling quite as deflated now. Obviously I know we still need to get to day 5 but I was convinced we were out already!

Sorry what?! Have you actually done IVF or know anything about the odds of it working?

Having a few embryos suitable for freezing would be preferable to having to start a new full IVF cycle if it doesn’t work out.
Or possibly a sibling if lucky.

I have actually. Many times. I was trying to help OP find a potential silver lining. Apologies if that offended you, no offence was intended.

All you need is one good one!
I got 5 eggs, 1 fell apart instantly, 2 fertilised, 2 became grade A and B blasts. We had our transfer yesterday! Praying for a healthy outcome. It just shows though, some people have 10+ eggs retrieved and no blasts. Some people have 3 eggs retrieved and end up with a baby. Feels like it's all chance tbh... But yeah, you only need one little fighter! ❤️ Wishing you the best of luck 🤞🏼

I also ovulated prior to my last retrieval in July which was heartbreaking. It's such a draining process but hopefully gives the greatest gift at the end🤞🏼
