Low sperm count results

Has anyone had results of low sperm count in their first test and come back with normal results on their second test? My husbands first test results came back with a count of 420,000. The fertility clinic booked him in for a second test to double check before they do anymore. I am trying not to think the worst. Just wondering how common it is for first results to be inaccurate? Thanks 🙏

Hi @Ziggy2025 firstly sorry to you and your partner for the news. It must have been a shock. Generally they ask to repeat the semen analysis to see if it’s a genuine issue or one off and this is normal with a result like this. Quite a lot of things can impact count like a cold or fever so if your partner had these in the lead up to the test then it could well improve. Try not to jump too far ahead just yet but just maybe be prepared for a similar outcome so you know what questions to ask.

otherwise if it’s a similar result you may wish to see a urologist to investigate the potential cause of the low numbers , there could be a blockage or genetic testing so getting these looked into is recommended. They will probably advise IVF ICSI but this kind of ignores the cause of the numbers so I would say it’s always worth still seeing a urologist if you can. Also see if your partner can improve his lifestyle in anyway. Healthy eating and cutting out alcohol and caffeine etc can have an impact
