How many embryos likely to make to day 5

Wishingandwaiting2453 · 21/09/2025 14:14

Please note that I have name changed as I have had a previous egg collection and lost 4 embryos through transfer. Some women in that forum probably have their babies by now. Please be kind.

I had my egg collection this Thursday just past (18/09). They said they had 14 eggs from collection. On Friday we were told we had 14 fertilised eggs. Day 3 phone call (today), we have 8 good quality embryos, 2 average and 4 poor (won't make it).
How likely is it that we will have at least a few embryos by day 5 for transfer?
(Tuesday 23rd September). They will only be transferring one but the thought that we have some stored in the freezer as well is comforting to me.

i’m currently in the same waiting period op. It’s so difficult isn’t it. I only have 4 good embryos on day 3 so I’m hoping for a miracle. You have good numbers so I have everything crossed that this round is yours. They do say around 50 percent but nothing is guaranteed. ❤️❤️ good luck. It’s such a stressful process xx

Wishingandwaiting2453 · 21/09/2025 14:47

@boberto88 Thank you. It is very stressful isn’t it? When are you transferring? On my last egg collection, by day 5 I had 4 embryos so don’t give up hope with any of them. I had a frozen transfer last time though.

Tomorrow hopefully 🤞 this is my 5th and final round. I’m so done with it now. Can’t be arsed with the stress of it anymore xx

@boberto88 Totally get that. It takes everything from you. I’ll be thinking of you tomorrow. Good luck x

Its really hard to predict but those numbers I'd like to be hopeful . They say anywhere from 30-50 percent get to blastocyst but it really is variable.

I've done two rounds of ivf and on both rounds we've had a 100% blast rate , although I don't produce many eggs. On round one we had 3 /4 eggs fertilised and 3 blasts .
On round two we had 2 / 3 eggs fertilised and 2 blasts

This is brilliant ❤️❤️❤️ helps me stay positive xx

Hoping for a good result for you OP, it's really hard waiting for the updates. That's a good number to be starting with, really hope you end up with a good number!

My clinic said 30-50% fertilised eggs on average would make it to blastocyst stage, we got 25% in round one and 80% in round 2 so it can definitely vary wildly!

Thanks @VioIetMoon That’s given me some perspective.

@Orangewillow Yeah that’s the problem with averages isn’t it. There’s always highs and lows. Science is supposed to be facts but this kind of Science seems to not always correlate.

Hope everyone gets through this in their own way and has some peace at least over time.

Hi op, just to add that I've used Chatgpt to put in my specific info - age at times of egg collections, previous results etc to get it to calculate specific odds for me - maybe worth a go?

I've also heard it's about 30-50% from day 3 to day 5 but it's also dependant on your age and what's happened in the past.

Incidentally, how does everyone's clinics rate the day 3 embryos as good/bad/not likely to make it? All I have been told is that they should be 6-10 cells on day 3. I had one that was 4 cells and they said it looked like it had stopped developing and then that did indeed not progress further. I also (on other times) have had 8 cell embryos on day 3 and then they made it to blastocyst.

I'm currently waiting to hear for my 1 embryo from this round (I have severely diminished ovarian reserve so only ever get 1 or 2 eggs) and it was 7 cells on day 3.. so I guess that's still "ok" according to the idea it should be 6-10 cells...but it's not as much as 7 cells so I'm trying to prepare myself for it not making it.

I had 14 fertilise and all 14 made it to day 5 and all were graded good so you never know! That being said we PGT-A tested 7 out of 14 and only 1 came back as euploid so to save heartache I would definitely recommend doing that. The thought of us implanting embryos that were destined to fail is just heartbreaking, I'm so glad we went for the testing!

Wishingandwaiting2453 · 22/09/2025 16:59

@zirafica That’s interesting that you got that many embryos but only 1 came back as euphloid. At this point, it feels like randomly stabbing in the dark!

@Wishingandwaiting2453 interesting and extremely demoralising. Well we tested only 7 out of the 14, so there's a chance that more euploids are hiding in the 6 we still have on ice (we decided to discard one as it hadn't developed from the right number of nuclei, the clinic said it could still be viable but we'd have to pay to get it tested and with 13 others that developed normally we thought our odds were good). But yeah, 1 out of 7 - way below the expected 30% euploids for my age. Total guessing game!!

Frenchie86 · 22/09/2025 21:31

Those are good numbers! It’s all about quality at the end of the day and you only need one good 1. I only had 7 eggs collected which I was a bit disappointed with. 6 fertilised and we ended up with 4 day 5 blastocysts. 2 of those are now my children ❤️ (one fresh and one frozen) so your odds are good, good luck!

boberto88 · 23/09/2025 11:53

@Wishingandwaiting2453 how did you get on lovely? Xx

Wishingandwaiting2453 · 23/09/2025 12:35

Hi,

Ive just got back from the hospital. They’ve transferred one this morning under sedation (past complications). Will get a phone call this afternoon or tomorrow to let me know if there’s any suitable for the freezer.

How did yours go? @boberto88 When have you been told to test? X

I’m testing 3rd Oct. I managed to get 2 in the freezer so my best round yet. Fingers crossed for sticky beans xx

Wishingandwaiting2453 · 24/09/2025 17:15

@boberto88 I’m testing 4th October. I’ve been in work today and quite stressed. Felt contraction type pains a few times and it’s worrying me.

Hope you’re okay?

OP posts:
boberto88 · 24/09/2025 17:36

That’s very normal. Try not to worry although easier said that done ❤️ I’m doing ok xxx

Wishingandwaiting2453 · 24/09/2025 17:42

@boberto88 i also have 2 in the freezer. Let’s hope they’re not needed yet and this has worked.
