Bum or vag?!

I am taking Cyclogest progesterone pessaries and had been told they could be taken rectally or vaginally (my gynae recommended alternating to minimise the irritation risk). But I just looked at the label and it says for ivf use them vaginally. For PMS/PND (I think it was) use them vaginally or rectally. So now I am concerned that if I only or predominantly use them rectally my progesterone levels will drop or something. Going to double check with my clinic but what do you all do?! Bum or vag?! I prefer bum tbh as less messy and my vag gets a bit stingy after a while. Oh the things I never thought I would type especially in a public forum… gotta laugh! 😂

🤣🤣
It’s bum for me and I’ve always done it this way with no issues!

I had one FET where I also needed to use another 4 different types of meds that all needed to go in my vagina, alongside the cyclogest! It was ridiculous. I felt like my vagina had opened a pharmacy up.

I know this thread is a serious topic but it did make me laugh! 😂
For reference I did both!! X

Both will get blood serum levels up but doing vaginally ensures the progesterone hits your uterus first and gives a better concentration of progesterone where it's needed. If you look up "first uterine pass effect" it'll explain better! Have done both though when cyclogest started to irritate after a while.

I use rectally, I am 10 weeks pregnant but when I was 6 weeks I had three days of bleeding not heavy or long but I was using vaginally had two scans and everything was fine. They had ended up really irritating me and once I changed bleeding stopped almost instantly!! But a personal choice if you don’t get irritated easily etc.

Jazz234 · 20/08/2025 11:22

Rectally here too. They caused too much irritation in the front. :)

Btowngirl · 24/08/2025 20:48

I dragged my feet initially but once I went rectal I could never go back (lol). Had DD from first fresh transfer so didn’t do any harm, never knew it was meant to be more effective vaginally. My clinic said do either!

InfertilitySWS · 25/08/2025 04:14

I always did rectally because I didn’t really see it again after 🤣 whereas vaginally I had to wear a pantyliner 🥴

Mrsplants · 28/08/2025 09:11

I’ve just switched to vaginally the last few days due to the comments on here about it being more effective. The inside of my vagina now feels so sore!! Has anybody else experienced this?

Matildahoney · 30/03/2026 22:23

Sorry, I know this is an old thread, did any of you suffer irritation taking them rectally? Been using them this way for 8 weeks (still 4 to go) and it feels like what I can only describe is the pain you get with piles but inside, a sort of stabbing.

HappyMamma2023 · 02/04/2026 10:14

I was told Bum by the clinic

zirafica · 03/04/2026 11:30

i was told either but did vaginally and am now 20 weeks preggo with our first FET!

flowergirl2020 · 10/04/2026 13:02

I prefer bum personally. I’ve had 6 rounds of treatment finally getting pregnant with out little boy on embryo 10 back in 2021. Just recently had a FET to try for a sibling and I’ve tried both routes and defo still prefer bum purely for the fact the lack of wax casing release doesn’t mess with my kind and have me worrying whether I’ve absorbed the progesterone or not. Just find it easier to crack on with my day and not worry. Best of luck lovely xx
