Blood vessel obstructing egg collection

Hi there,

I had my first of three egg collections today as part of a 3 cycle package. Unfortunately they were only able to access one ovary as the other was obstructed by a blood vessel. They’d warned me this might happen during scans in the run up to egg collection, but it feels pretty gutting still, especially since the obstructed ovary had more follicles. My clear ovary had one egg!

We have two more cycles, so not all hope is lost. However, I wanted to get anyone’s experience of this happening and whether their blood vessel had helpfully moved during subsequent cycles. The Drs seem to think the next one will be fine, but I’m worried they aren’t being honest. I’ve always had problems in Drs visualising ovaries in every scan I’ve had.

Any advice or similar experience really welcome!!

thanks x

I'm so sorry, it's frustrating when things like that happen.

My ovaries are also difficult to access. I had 3 egg collections and one time my left ovary was inaccessible because it was too deep in the body and behind a blood vessel. However, they managed to collect eggs from it on two other occasions. I was told it was difficult and they had to press hard on my stomach but I was asleep and didn't feel it.

Every egg collection is different so you might have better luck next time. Fingers crossed!

@GreenLemonade thank you so much for your reply. It gives me hope that maybe next time won’t be as disastrous as this cycle!

hey how weird I've just come across this...I've just had my egg collection cancelled entirely as they didn't think they'd be able to access the one ovary that had a follicle. I have diminished ovarian reserve so only ever get 1 or 2 eggs (2 eggs last cycle in June, 1 blastocyst, waiting for PGTA testing) and the right ovary has often been in a tricky place and they've had to push on my tummy a bit to move it but they've always gone ahead with the EC and managed to retrieve from it.

This time they did the usual poking around in theatre before trying to put me under but this time my ovary wasn't moving & bladder was still in the way. I had the nurses, anaesthetist, Dr etc all trying and really pushing hard all over my tummy and everywhere trying to get the ovary to move but it still had the bladder in the way & they didnt think they'd be able to get it even under sedation. So cancelled the egg collection. I guess it's better they cancelled it (so I've still got 2 cycles left in my 3 cycle package) rather than going ahead and then losing my cycle and still being unable to access the ovary. So crap though

I even tried getting up and jumping up and down a bit and trying to wiggle it around. The nurse hugged me when they decided it wasn't worth going ahead and said we'd try again next month...so crap..
