IVF - bleeding 5 days after transfer

Hi, I had my transfer 8 days ago now and started bleeding the evening of day 5. It started out enough to cover a piece of tissue, then stopped briefly and then started again on and off. I've had a few gushes of blood (dark red blood) and it has continued on like a dark red blood/period (relatively light in the day, not enough to fill a pad but quite heavy in the morning after waking up). Every time I wipe there's a bit on the tissue.

Has anyone experienced this after transferring an embryo? I'm not due to test for another 2 days but I have no pregnancy symptoms. I've upped my pessaries today (3 a day) but I've lost all hope.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds as if your period may be coming, sounds too heavy for implantation bleeding but I’m hoping I’m wrong. Big hugs

Thank you. I did think this, but was praying it wasn't the case and also surprised a period could come that soon after transfer.

@EllVic I tested positive a couple of times on a previous cycle on Day7p5dt and my period started a few days later so I had a chemical. Hopefully this is different for you and sending you a hug x

@confused2025 thank you & I'm really sorry to hear that you went through that. Every time I speak to the clinic they've said bleeding isn't common but it can happen for women throughout pregnancy - I just couldn't see anything on here that suggested anyone had bled a few days after transfer and been successful.
Appreciate your response x

It can happen. I think it might be worth you checking your progesterone level via a blood test as for your next attempt, you may need to increase the dosage and this will be supporting data. I think this can be very common. I hope you’re ok x

@confused2025 I spoke to my clinic today and they explained because it was a fresh transfer they don't check your progesterone levels like they would in a frozen transfer because they won't be able to get a true reading due to the amount of follicles developed from egg retrieval that will secret progesterone. All a bit confusing. Anyway, I had to push to increase my pessaries to 3 a day instead of 2, but I think it's too late now.
I'm very upset but trying to remain strong and move forward. thank you again x

My transfer where this happened was also fresh and I’ve had more success with my frozen. I can understand. Thinking of you @EllVic

PlanBFertility · 29/07/2025 15:55

@EllVic my clinic checked my Progesterone post transfer

EllVic · 29/07/2025 15:56

@PlanBFertility and that was after a fresh transfer?

I had bleeding on day 5 and by day 6 it was like a period. My clinic brought me in on day 6 for a progesterone level and it was low so they put me on a lot of progesterone (BD lubion as well as pessaries I was already on) Tested negative day 7 and 8 and they said I could stop meds as it was my period. Fresh transfer. Hope it’s not the case for you though! Such a stressful process

EllVic · 29/07/2025 16:09

@NiftyAmberLion I did mention to my clinic re the lubion but again they said because my lining was a really good measurement at my egg retrieval and it wasn't a frozen transfer they wouldn't normally prescribe them! So confusing with all the conflicting information. I'm really sorry that happened to you. If I'm honest, I've sort of accepted my fate (not that I'd been easy) but feel like i'm having to hold out to 'confirm' it with a test for them is just prolonging it all

Yeh tbh I had accepted it was over which did make it a bit easier to accept as it had been kind of a slow build up with the bleeding! I read a bit about it at the time and it seems to happen not infrequently so I don’t understand why they don’t just give more progesterone for fresh transfers or check it but my clinic also said they don’t check it for fresh. My consultant was very dismissive of the early bleeding even being due to not enough progesterone in my follow up and said it was probably just due to the embryo not implanting but day 5 dpt seemed very early to me as it’s earlier than you’d expect to get a period.

EllVic · 29/07/2025 16:27

@NiftyAmberLion yes, that was my first initial thought that surely it can't be a period considering 5 days is so early. From my understanding it is the dip in progesterone that has bought it on. So frustrating that I will never know it seems. Thank you again for sharing your story with me and I really wish you so much luck for the future X

Best of luck to you too! Xx

I’m sorry this has happened, I had this as well with what seemed like a period really soon after a fresh transfer, had to wait until the date they’d given still to do a test even though really I already knew. I hope it’s different for you, they did increase my progesterone to three a day on the next cycle so at the very least it was something they could tweak. The whole process is so hard, wishing you all the very best with it.

PlanBFertility · 29/07/2025 17:48

@EllVic jist looked back at my diary. I had a fresh transfer on the 7th July and on 10th I had my progesterone and oestrogen tested.
