Transfer one or two embryos

Hi

I’m turning 40 next month. I have a day 5 3Aa and a Day 6 4Bb. I will have my embryo transfer in about two to three weeks. Has anyone here had success with transferring two embryos? I know that it could result in multiples but this is something that I’m very open too.

Hi, I had a double FET (it was the 3rd FET after 2 failed single transfers) and that worked as a singleton pregnancy-DC born. I was 38 at time of transfer and that was the age of the eggs following batch freezing. If you're happy with everything where other factors are concerned (lining, blood flow to uterus, microbiome, lining condition such as polyps/fibroids removed etc, basically anything to do with factors other than the embryo) then I would suggest double transfer. Odds in the age 35+ category tends to be 1 in 4 embryos being normal which was the case in my situation.

confused2025 · 06/05/2025 17:24

Thanks @Sunflower360 this is my thinking too. Were your embryos similar in grading? Does this make a difference?

Sunflower360 · 06/05/2025 22:29

@confused20251st FET 5AB failed, 2nd FET 5BA failed, 3rd FET 5BB & 5BC worked (not sure which). So grading seemed irrelevant in success!

IslandsAround · 06/05/2025 22:46

I had a double transfer, had twins, one with health issues.

There is a reason why babies come out one at a time! I’d recommend one egg only. Another FET isn’t too much hardship.

Brownowl83 · 07/05/2025 04:14

I'm 42 and had my first FET last week, only had 2 blasts and decided to do a double transfer. Only one made the thaw... I would suggest you also take the advice if your consultant. Good luck!

confused2025 · 07/05/2025 07:14

Thanks @Sunflower360it really does seem to be irrelevant.
@brownowl83I know they say the rates of blasts not making thaw are minimal but hearing so much of this happening and this is my fear for my two blasts. Thank you for your advice and yes, will chat with consultant. Thinking of you in the TWW.
@IslandsAround sorry to hear this. If you don’t mind me asking were the complications down to the birth that if it was a single birth would have been avoided? Trying to work out the best thing to do - for my age category the numbers seem to show more success with a double transfer hence me asking about people’s experience so that we do the right thing.

Twin rates of congenital issues are double that of singletons. Add in that you have half the capacity to look after a child with high needs as you have a baby at home & one that might need additional support at hospital.

My uninformed view is that the twin pregnancy puts more pressure on the mother esp if older and coming off back of IVF treatments. So one at a time where possible

Brownowl83 · 07/05/2025 20:41

@confused2025 just wanted to say you'll read more about thawing failing as more people will mention it that not. Do what is best for you, that's all that matters ❤️

confused2025 · 08/05/2025 06:29

@Brownowl83yes, but it’s good to be aware as my clinic say it’s v v rare but there is always a chance. It’s tough - ever decision has a pro/con in this but I’ll chat with my consultant and continue to research. How are you feeling?

OP posts:
Brownowl83 · 08/05/2025 07:00

@confused2025 the whole journey is backed by luck I've found! I think many will say the same. These babies are literally miracles!

My OTD is on Monday but I think my period could potentially be making an appearance soon from my symptoms the past 24 hours 😩 Will see what tomorrow brings...

confused2025 · 08/05/2025 08:56

@Brownowl83they really are and it feels like a very expensive game of roulette. I get so sad when I see parents that are just not interested in their kids as well and just think of everyone in this community who would do anything for their miracle baby/ies and do anything for them . I’m thinking of you x

@confused2025 thank you, and likewise thinking of you in the coming weeks 🤞🏻

confused2025 · 05/06/2025 06:04

Hi @Brownowl83day 6PET and not sure on symptoms - is it the drugs? Is it early implantation? I haven’t test yet. A little scared as I tested at day 6 last cycle, got a positive and it ended in chemical on day 11. I might do it over the weekend. My beta is on Wednesday. How are you doing? My clinic said no to the double transfer :(

I had the option but went for just single and I’ll do single again

being high risk myself I wouldn’t risk it
also depends how many embryos you have .. if I had loads then I would of considered it for sure

PrincessofLiechtenstein · 05/06/2025 18:45

I’m 40, had one funded NHS round which we got three day 6 embryos from. Had a 3B+B+ and a 1-2B+B put back and currently 15 weeks with one baby.

I decided to take the (small) risk of twins as I felt that I didn’t want to waste time, and we only got one nhs transfer.

it’s worked out OK for us but it is a bit of a risk. I was quite open to twins though. Considering my age it’s probably the only way I’d have got to have two.

Brownowl83 · 06/06/2025 06:36

@confused2025 the wait is hard but do what you can. I tested on 10 days as that was when my period would be due anyway. My FET was also natural with no trigger or medication. However everyone is different as hormones are taking control! I had period pains and spotting, thought it was all over but turns out it was hormones. It can be a very confusing time on top of the entire journey so my thoughts are with you ❤️

I'm 8 weeks pregnant today! A few more tests in the next 4 weeks to go before it will fully feel real 😂

confused2025 · 06/06/2025 07:37

@Brownowl83that is amazing 🤩 I’m feeling positive for you. I keep thinking I’m getting my period but it’s just white discharge. I cried on a meeting yesterday - tbf they showed a video that was a little emotional and I’m just so tired. I think I might test Sunday so mentally prepared for beta on Wednesday.
@PrincessofLiechtensteinI had that same feeling. Congratulations and sending you ❤️ for the next few weeks.
@Rebekah77I know it’s not the best option for everyone, but there are stats that say it can be beneficial in my age category and I have no health concerns and am active. I was just annoyed that they completely shot me down and wouldn’t discuss, especially when paying them ££££’s

Deffo fully agreed ! If I wasn’t very high risk I would totally go for it !! Xx

fingers crossed for you @confused2025

Brownowl83 · 06/06/2025 19:24

@confused2025 thank you! Hang in there, not long now for you ✨

confused2025 · 08/06/2025 05:42

I just did my test and my husband is still asleep. I think I have a pretty strong positive on a clear blue - day 9 here and I had to tell someone 😊
I also feel very nauseous 😢
hopefully it’s worked. Thank you all for your help x
