IVF / closed cervix

Hi everyone,

Any fellow IVF people out there have issues with a closed cervix?

I had my saline sonogram this week which was the worst thing I’ve ever experienced and I’m now really anxious about embryo transfer as I’ve just learned that they use a similar catheter to insert the embryos. The consultant said my cervix was very closed, hence why it was so excruciating. I have had both a LEEP and colposcopy in my 20s so I assume it is closed due to scar tissue.

Any one had a similar issue? I’m wondering if it is an option for sedation for transfer, that’s how anxious I am about having to experience that again. I was shouting out in pain like a woman in labour and from reading online this doesn’t seem to be the norm. It also doesn’t seem like a great idea to be this anxious during the process as it probably won’t help success!

thanks in advance!

I have sedation for transfer. Most clinics will do it! I think mine charges an extra 350 for sedation

I was given a diclofenac suppository to take two hours before the transfer and I honestly didn’t feel a thing, the saline scan was very painful as are smears etc as I have a high and hidden cervix.

It made such a difference. I have had three coils without any pain relief (absolute agony) I left the transfer furious that I could have had such simple and easy pain relief! They wouldn’t expect a man to have a procedure like that without pain relief!

Thank you so much! I honestly considered pulling the plug because I was so anxious. It only occurred to me after I had it done that coils must be horrendous, you poor poor thing! I am actually a bit fuming at the fact that this wasn’t checked as part of my fertility examinations given my medical hx. I mean I guess IVF negates the need for an open cervix but I’m pretty sure those swimmers weren’t able to even get in.

I had the saline scan done before and I remembered it being awful but it was so much worse than I remembered this time. And I was expecting it to be awful. That is such a relief to know! I will speak to my consultant about that then as an option. My cervix is apparently basically closed, which would have been useful information to have just before they tried to shove a catheter through it! She informed me afterward that it was a little more open… ehh yeah I can imagine after you just shoved a stick through it with force!

I really appreciate you both taking the time to reply so thank you. You’ve just made my weekend so much better!
